Lena Dunham: Globes Worst Yellow Taffeta
I loved Lena Dunham’s dress at the Emmys – click here for a refresher – so much that I called it my Best Dressed on The Social the following day. And this is why I don’t understand what happened here.
I don’t understand why YELLOW TAFFETA is STILL SHOWING UP ON AWARD SHOW RED CARPETS. Did we learn nothing from Julie Bowen? (Click here if you need a reference on what I mean.) It doesn’t work on anyone, not even Charlize Theron. But then again, she probably wouldn’t.
Duana pointed it out when she wrote about Dunham at the Emmys – how it was a very, very quiet show for her. And it was the same last night too. Hardly any cutaways, especially in comparison to last year when Tina and Amy kept the spotlight on her constantly. And Girls won last year in the Comedy category. I’ve been a student of this pop culture thing for as long as I can remember and I still don’t understand how these rises and falls are determined, in particular how they happen when a show seems to be improving and defining more and more its own voice. It’s not like they’ve found a replacement for Girls either. Like if Orphan Black and Tatiana Maslany were the Girls and Lena Dunham of 2014, I’d say it makes sense. But that’s not the case because Maslany’s invitation to the party was all she got. So what is the new Girls and if there isn’t one, why isn’t Girls still it?
