Written by Sarah The Cannes Film Festival wrapped up on Sunday with the award ceremony at which Terrence Malick’s long-awaited The Tree of Life was given the top prize, the Palme d’Or. Last week after Tree’s mixed reception on the Croisette I posited to Lainey that Tree was more Oscar than Cannes, but she said no, that it was definitely more Cannes than Oscar. Full Story

Ryan Gosling & a man’s suit

I learned a lot of about men’s suits yesterday. We’re going to a really swanky wedding tonight and Jacek didn’t have one. He’s not the sharpest dresser, as you know, to begin with. And since he works from home, there’s very little reason for him to dress up. We’ve been talking about getting him a new suit for a while. Full Story

Janet is thin again

It’s a cycle every two years or so. Janet Jackson goes militant and loses a lot of weight and takes her top off for the cover of some magazine, and then a year later, she’s covered up in sweats not wanting to be photographed. Don’t sh-t on me for making it an issue. I’m only making it an issue because SHE makes it one when she grants an interview to some glossy about how she’s finally found the formula to “stay fit forever!!!” Here’s Janet at AMFAR last night at the Hotel du Cap looking svelte and ageless. Full Story

Sean Penn is killing it in Cannes today. Check him out working denim on denim, posing with some hip-jutting attitude at the photo call for This Must Be The Place. He plays Cheyenne, an aging goth rocker looking for the Nazi who tortured his dad. I want you to watch this clip before reading the rest. Ok so Frances McDormand? She plays his WIFE, a firefighter in Dublin, in the film. Full Story

Bright lips take a break for AMFAR

The AMFAR gala is happening tonight in Cannes. We usually always cover this event but this year, we were only staying a week at the festival and, fortunately – or unfortunately if my etalk boss is reading, ha! – this time our trip didn’t include this party. I say that selfishly because the guest list for AMFAR is usually really prime and even if the celebrities don’t stop for interviews – most of the good ones don’t – the gala is good for some great b-roll that we can use throughout the year. Full Story

The Annual Tradition

I’m so happy to be home. Cannes was a great work trip, and we got a lot of sh-t done, and a lot of gossip gathered, but I was cursed the entire time. Not just my laptop either. Will explain later. But while I’m delighted to be back in Vancouver, I am a little sad that I left Cannes without a Roberto Cavalli sighting. Full Story

Kirsten’s Melancholia, Charlotte’s bump

The last time Lars Von Trier came to Cannes, a lot of movie people stormed out the theatre, expressing disgust with Antichrist. He reacted as he does. Like people don’t get him. Like an auteur misunderstood. Some would say that’s how he gets off. And yesterday he pushed that too far. During a press conference for his new film Melancholia, which is receiving some very good reviews, and in competition this year, Von Trier first decided to publicly discuss Kirsten Dunst’s struggle with depression, and then went off on a ramble about Jews and Nazis and Hitler. Full Story

The 80s in Cannes

The Hollywood Reporter honoured Jodie Foster yesterday in Cannes at the Martinez. Rob Lowe was there to give a toast. The Hotel New Hampshire! I didn’t understand it the first time I watched it. Um, I was 11. It just made me horny. Then I went over a friend’s in university ten years later and we decided to rent it on a Friday night. Full Story

Hockey in Cannes

Several of you have made requests for this – Sidney Crosby, Jordan Staal, Max Talbot, and Paul Martin of the Pittsburgh Penguins were in Cannes the other day at a party for the short film Trophy Wife starring Jamie Lynn Sigler. Random, right? Conference Finals or the Croisette? I guess partying on a yacht takes the sting away. Full Story

The dress. Both. Zoe Saldana arrived in a white gown with candy cane stripes last night at the Tree of Life gala. She was disappointing in yellow, if you recall (click here for a refresher), at the Met Gala and it looks like she was just saving the goods for the Croisette. Full Story

Leo & Blake: photo assumption

So she skipped hitting any carpets in exchange for an introduction to Steven Spielberg? Oh but Blake Lively will be busy here in Cannes. Ryan Gosling is here too. Right now though, it's about Leo. Earlier I noted there had yet to be any pictures of either, and certainly not Blake getting glorified at the Palais. Full Story

Blake & Leo in Cannes?

Page Six is reporting that Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio have been hooking up in Cannes, that they were at the Hotel du Cap together on Friday. I've no idea where Blake is. Leo, for sure, was on the Croisette at the Red Granite party for Kanye West's performance on Saturday. Full Story

Brange > Cannes

We had Brange as our top story on etalk yesterday and I can't imagine it was any different for any other entertainment show. They were the Main Event on Monday. Yesterday I described the process of getting credentialed for a red carpet here in Cannes - click here Full Story

Gwen & Gavin support the Brange

Weren't we just talking about this last week? In this article? Gwen Stefani and Gwyneth Paltrow were out for dinner in London the other day. Gwen has spent the last few days in Cannes, deluxing on private yachts, hanging out at the du Cap, and last night, making an appearance at the Tree of Life red carpet, no doubt supporting the Brange. Full Story
