Met Sober: SJP

I mean sober as in serious, but I can understand why you might think it’s the other way. Her husband however wasn’t ignoring her as her date last night. So there’s that. It was no surprise that Sarah Jessica Parker chose McQueen last night to honour the late designer. Some of her most memorable red carpet appearances were courtesy of McQueen. Full Story

Best Met Black: Leighton Meester

Maybe I’m partial to this because it’s a dress I would totally buy for myself... if I could afford Louis Vuitton. Love it so much. SO MUCH. And on her it’s just so well done. The sleek ponytail, the subdued makeup, the earrings... It’s perfect. But... The shoes. I don’t know about the overkill on the shoes. Full Story

Worst Met Colour: Rashida Jones

Michelle sent me a note last night when all of us started hitting the wires to see the photos as they we released. Her message was simple: “How can this happen to someone so beautiful?”It’s true. Rashida Jones is beautiful. And she is dressed up in all kinds of bridesmaid purple wrong. Full Story

Met Try: Demi Moore

The Royal Wedding was on Friday. And showing up in a fascinator like this to the Met Gala in New York three days later is kinda like saying, I really, really wanted to be invited but I wasn’t so I’m wearing what I would have worn there instead. How sad. I’m cringing for her now. Not unlike the way I cringed for Jennifer Love Hewitt when she dressed up like Audrey Hepburn and went to Tiffany’s. Full Story

Met without the braid: Rihanna

May 3, 2011 07:41:21 Posted at May 3, 2011 07:41:21
Lainey Posted by Lainey

Stella McCartney had some big names in her clothes last night. Madonna and Gwyneth (more on them later), Kate Hudson, as always, and Rihanna too, in a one shoulder black lace which, I mean it’s not something I’d pick for myself, but on Rihanna it fit beautifully, it’s made beautifully, with gorgeous lines, and enough drama on its own, it really didn’t need that extra bit of straw looped around her neck. Full Story

Is this your Met Best? Diane Kruger&Joshua Jackson

May 3, 2011 07:28:09 Posted at May 3, 2011 07:28:09
Lainey Posted by Lainey

Have been hearing from many of you over email and Twitter this morning. Almost everyone is into Diane Kruger as styled by Jason Wu. No, it certainly doesn’t suck. But I can’t say it’s my best. Maybe it’s because Jason Wu, while popular and talented and very, very appealing, doesn’t do it for me in the way of pure originality. Full Story

Met Olsens: what did you expect?

May 3, 2011 07:19:41 Posted at May 3, 2011 07:19:41
Lainey Posted by Lainey

I don’t know why people bother tutting about what the Olsens wear, especially to events like these. At this point, does anyone really think that they’re hoping to make it onto People.com’s Best Dressed of the Night? Mary-Kate would probably prune herself to death if she was listed side by side on style with Carrie Underwood, are you kidding me? If there’s any party where the Olsens will get it, where they will not go boring like Zoe Saldana, it’s this one. Full Story

Met Boring: Zoe Saldana

Lainey Posted by Lainey

It’s bright yellow and I’m calling it boring. Because it is. It’s strapless. It’s that trademark Calvin Klein seemingly super-industrial wrinkle resistant material. There’s a belt at the waist. With some flaps at that back. And... that’s it. But... This is Zoe Saldana. Full Story

Best Swift Styling: Taylor Swift

May 3, 2011 06:38:32 Posted at May 3, 2011 06:38:32

This may be my favourite Taylor Swift of all time. The way she’s been styled, this might her best ever. And it goes back to what I said about Beyonce – taking her own steeze and twisting it out for the Met Gala on a night for McQueen. That would be the bottom and the structuring of that dress, and that pattern across her body, like a blot that’s spreading out across her torso, reminds me what it looks like to study a stain underneath a microscope, forming what’s certainly not the prettiest shape, with just a hint of ugliness even, without the obviousness of, say, a torture mask on one’s face; and this is a good balance for her, I think –not huge a leap off the cliff, but some movement towards the outer the edge of where she usually lives sartorially. Full Story

Similar Met Bumps: Kate Hudson & Jessica Alba

Lainey Posted by Lainey

I read somewhere, I can’t remember where, that Alba’s ensemble last night was one of the best. What? This is Jessica Alba, who is pregnant, in a no-colour Ralph Lauren, and I don’t see how this can be characterised as anything other than a mess. Look at that material. You know what that is? Go to Toys R Us. Full Story

Met Prom: Ashley Greene & Jennifer Hudson

May 3, 2011 06:05:16 Posted at May 3, 2011 06:05:16
Lainey Posted by Lainey

The Met Gala is not the prom. But you know, without fail, some people come to this thing thinking it’s like their own wedding. This explains why Jennifer Hudson chose Vera Wang. That’s a wedding dress, it’s a prom dress, it’s certainly not a high fashion dress, but then again, Andre Leon Talley once styled her for the Oscars like an asshole so maybe she’s a little gun shy in the sartorial game. Full Story

Met Fishtails: Beyonce & Christina Ricci

May 3, 2011 05:45:14 Posted at May 3, 2011 05:45:14
Lainey Posted by Lainey

Have a feeling we’ll be fighting about this one. Christina Ricci is in Zac Posen. It’s exquisite. I mean, from a design perspective, it’s all you want at the Met Gala. Drama, imagination, quality, craftsmanship... But I feel like it might be the right dress on the wrong person. I don’t know that she’s really rising with it. Full Story

17-off at the Met: Dakota & Saoirse

May 3, 2011 05:31:17 Posted at May 3, 2011 05:31:17
Lainey Posted by Lainey

I suppose, if there’s anyone who could get away with the Valentino flower tulle explosion worn by Dakota Fanning at the Met Gala it was probably Dakota Fanning. She’s 17. Prom is still within the parametres of her actual experience. But f-ck is this thing ever ugly. And you have to wonder – did they really design this for 18 and under? I don’t think so. Full Story

Best Met Photobomb: Gisele & Ginnifer

May 3, 2011 05:09:18 Posted at May 3, 2011 05:09:18
Lainey Posted by Lainey

Check out Gisele Bundchen’s face behind Ginnifer Goodwin last night. Amazing, right? Shall we Photo Assumption? Errrrm... who invited all these Bs? Is that the girl from Twilight with the really bad pixie wig? To be fair, Ginnifer Goodwin is a few steps ahead of Ashley Greene. And her makeup is great. Full Story
