That’s My Boy on Father’s Day

Father’s Day is this weekend.  What does your dad want for Father’s Day? There was a time when my dad might have wanted my ma, the Chinese Squawking Chicken, not to squawk for an hour, just to give us all a break. But then she got sick. And we’ve never wanted her to keep squawking so bad.

My dad has been a hero through it all. The nurses kept saying they’d never seen a husband so devoted. Even she has to admit it now. And she can rarely bring herself to say something kind about anyone.

It’s time to thank Dad for being Dad.  If you’ve read the blog for any length of time, you’ll know that through my early teens my dad raised me on his own in Toronto. Tough work, especially since I was not easy. Here he was saving his ass off to send me to private school and I’m ditching class, panhandling for fun at the subway station.

I guess I should have been Donny Berger’s kid? That’s Adam Sandler’s character in That’s My Boy, a mess of a man who fathered a son in his teens called Han Solo played by Andy Samberg who changes his name as soon as possible to the less, um, evocative “Todd”. Donny raises Hans/Todd as a single parent until Todd’s 18th birthday. Then he ditches him for 12 years and on returns when he’s in debt right when Hans Todd is about to marry Leighton Meester.

Sarah reminded me recently that Adam Sandler has had ten - TEN! - $100 million PLUS movies in the last 12 years.  It’s Father’s Day this weekend. The US Open is happening. Golf, Happy Gilmore, and Adam Sandler is back at the movies.

That’s My Boy opens tonight.  See the trailer below.
