World War Brange: temporary ceasefire
Last Friday the situation was nuclear. Angelina Jolie had filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, requesting full custody of the children. Two days after it, news breaks that the precipitating incident was a dramatic argument on a private plane involving one of their children during which Brad was drunk. It was then confirmed that the FBI were evaluating the incident and that the LA County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) was investigating.
In the days that followed, even Brad’s sources could not deny that he had been drinking and that he lost his temper. But they also claimed that Angelina has been scheming to take his children away from him and that he’s the true victim of a coldhearted ambitious woman. The worst thing a woman can be is ambitious, right? Ambitious, prepared, and organised.
TMZ is now reporting that Brange have reached a temporary agreement on the recommendation of the DCFS. According to both TMZ (with seemingly close connections to Angelina’s lawyer, Laura Wasser) and US Weekly (their cover this week was clearly pro-Pitt), the agreement breaks down as follows:
-- Angelina gets full physical custody of the 6 kids.
-- Brad gets visitation, with strings attached. The initial visit is with a therapist present and the therapist then has the power to either allow Brad subsequent unmonitored visits or insist on being present whenever he's around the kids.
-- Brad is subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
-- Brad and Angelina will each submit to individual counseling. In addition, Brad, Angelina and the kids will undergo family counseling together.
Temporary full custody to Angelina Jolie, which is what she wanted. Supervised visitation for Brad Pitt, as recommended by Child Services. And random drug testing for Brad, as recommended by Child Services. They’re expected to revisit this agreement in 3 weeks. But there’s no denying this is an early decision in favour of Angelina. But does it put some of the mess we’ve heard into perspective?
Something happened on a plane while Brad Pitt was drunk around his kids (a fact that is not in dispute, not even from his own sources) that prompted Angelina Jolie to mobilise swiftly, using all her resources and her experience, to file for divorce and secure custody of their children. Do you scorch the earth just for the sake of scorching the earth? Or do you scorch it because what you’re running from has to be burned down?
