A few weeks ago I called it Argo Remorse -- click here for a refresher. Snubbing Ben Affleck for Best Director could very well turn out to be a gift from the Academy since he’s been receiving pity ovations and pity-winning at every awards opportunity from the time they announced the nominations. And there’s Lincoln, shaking his head, having come out of the gate so hard with so many nominations -- the most of the entire field -- and losing momentum at every stop.
Still, even though Argo had a very, very big weekend -- the Producers’ Guild named it Best Picture too -- still I’m not sure it’s a lock. As many of the experts keep pointing out, Apollo 13 went on the same run and didn’t take the big prize. Read Full Intro

Who? Well, for the 12 of us who watched and still miss Friday Night Lights, and the 8 of you who watch and love Parenthood, obviously the most important actor in these photos is Michael B Jordan... And Michael B Jordan just happened to have a very, VERY good Sundance. Jordan’s film Fruitvale, about the last day in the life of Oscar Grant who was fatally shot (even though he was not resisting arrest) by a transit officer in Oakland in 2009, was considered one of the major highlights of the festival. Did you see Jimmy Kimmel Sucks hosted by Matt Damon last night? I was Nyquiled so I only watched this morning, in bits and pieces because the entire show is geo-blocked and YouTube has the individual segments spliced up. Heads up Americans, before you send a recommendation, Hulu is geo-blocked too. Full Story
“Burnell, you made me cry!” *Randy Jackson voice* Yo for me, dawg, for me, Burnell Taylor’s audition in Baton Rouge last night, THIS is the most interesting moment of Mimi on Idol so far! Here’s the thing about Mariah on Idol - she can act so self-obsessed and deluded that it’s very easy to forget sometimes that she possesses, or at least once possessed, a truly rare and exquisite gift. The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 11 recap Guess whose PVR cut out right as (MAJOR SPOILER) Jeremy shot Damon in the heart? Obviously I found a way to work around it, because otherwise I wouldn’t have the charming title for this blog above but it kind of bugged me for a different reason. Full Story

A beautiful first trailer for the Coen Brothers’ new movie Inside Llewyn Davis was released this week. The spirit of Bob Dylan hovers over Oscar Isaac, current #1 on my Five List, in the title role and even though almost every single write-up of the preview includes Justin Timberlake’s name on the cast list. This is what JLO called Parker on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart the other night. Out Of Sight is a great movie, maybe her best movie. Is Transporter Jason Statham’s best movie? I don’t know enough about Jason Statham movies to be able to decide what, exactly, she’s trying to say here. Full Story

Word is she’s negotiating for a part in the film adaptation, scheduled to begin shooting in the Spring in Chicago. Someone from Summit even tweeted that her involvement is confirmed, before pulling down the tweet later on. Everyone is now speculating on the role -- most think she’ll play Jeanine Matthews, the leader of Erudite who doesn’t have a huge part (in terms of screen time) in Divergent but shows up a lot more in Insurgent. Ever since Disney acquired LucasFilm, and by extension the Star Wars franchise last fall, the number one question has been who will direct “Episode VII”? Disney has already hired screenwriter Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3, Star Wars VII—what an interesting progression) to work on the script, and now it’s being widely reported that JJ Abrams will direct the next Star Wars film. Pam! Happy 40th Birthday! Thanks for asking after Marcus and Barney. Marcus was actually named after Marcus Flutie from Megan McCafferty’s Jessica Darling series and Marcus Aurelius as Gladiator was on the weekend we met him. As for Barney, who is two, and very busy, and really annoying - he’s better now which means that we’ve all gone back to hating him. Full Story
As sick days go, yesterday was a good day to take off. Every time I woke up, in a panic and sweaty, worried I’d missed something, a big breaking scandal, I was reassured by the fact that, still, Beyonce remains the top story of the week. Which you know she must know, and repeat to herself:
The President was inaugurated this week, and people keep talking about ME.
ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Will Beyonce, who is not nominated, and is not scheduled to attend, find a way to dominate the SAGs in Sunday? I’ll be live-tweeting. Click here to see my Twitter. We’ll know then if it’s Chastain or Lawrence. Or maybe someone else, by surprise. Most experts continue to predict that for Oscar it’s still a Jessica vs Jennifer situation though there are a few who are saying that Academy voters aren’t hot on either and will end up putting through Emmanuelle Riva in the way I’ve been saying that Naomi Watts could be the one to benefit from split votes and a lack of enthusiasm for the other two.
