I FINALLY saw Call Me By Your Name, and Lainey would like me to get “all up in my feelings” about it, but I don’t have Kathleen’s gift for emotive expression. As I wrote during TIFF, Call Me By Your Name is my favourite film of the year so far. It is one of the most exquisite films of the last few years. I don’t think I’ve haven’t told you enough how much I loved it, how I can’t wait for you to see it, so that we can talk about it, so that we can all virtually hug each other together because you want to keep it in your system, and share the feelings that it gives you to everyone else. Full Story

I have a ticket tonight to Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape Of Water which just won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival this weekend and if I can be released from the red carpet I’m covering before 930pm, I’ll be able to see how it holds up against my favourite film, not only of TIFF, but of the year so far – Call Me By Your Name. Full Story

There’s a small group at work and we exchange emails almost every day about possible contenders, speculating about how the field will narrow as we get deeper into the fall. While the work itself should always be paramount, needless to say, what generates more or less award season interest is who the players will be. Full Story

Late last week John Schnepp, the director of the documentary The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, which examines the breakdown of Tim Burton and Nicolas Cage’s collaboration on a Superman movie in the 1990s, appeared on a podcast for PopCornTalk and dropped the interesting tidbit that Mad Max visionary/director George Miller is in line to make Man of Steel 2 for Warner Brothers/DC. Full Story

Guy Ritchie’s take on retro-pop espionage flicks, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. did not have a very good opening weekend, landing in third place behind the surprisingly (TRIUMPHANTLY) strong Straight Outta Compton and Tom Cruise’s take on retro-pop espionage flicks, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Full Story
