None of this half-Disney Marvel sh*t, Ava DuVernay has decided that if she’s going work for a corporate machine, she’s going to work for Disney itself, the corporatiest, machiniest one of all. Full Story

Ava DuVernay has been at Sundance, visible and accessible just as all of Hollywood is focusing on #OscarsSoWhite and the criticism of not only the Academy Awards but also of big machine entertainment overall. As you know, Ava directed Selma which was nominated for Best Picture but ignored in other major categories. Full Story

Sarah Posted by Sarah at October 26, 2015 14:12:56 October 26, 2015 14:12:56

Ava DuVernay was honored this year as part of Elle’s annual Women In Hollywood awards, and she gave an AMAZING speech at their awards dinner. The whole thing is well worth a read, but there are a couple highlights that tie into some of the particular issues surrounding diversity in Hollywood that we’ve talked about recently. Full Story

I have an unsettling theory to put forward. Do you think that maybe Kerry Washington is the embodiment of a cliché? You know the one, right? A person who is as beautiful inside as they are out? Look, I know, I’m on little sleep and it seems saccharine in the light of Monday morning. Full Story

As you know now, Straight Outta Compton took the box office this weekend, handily. A $57 million opening…in August. It’s an achievement. And now it’s generating some very loud Oscar buzz. Say what you want about Marvel movies, but directing them is a landmark career moment for filmmakers. Marvel can’t guarantee A List status for its stars, but it can transform a director’s career. So it is very, VERY exciting that Ava DuVernay has signed on to direct Black Panther, due in 2018. Full Story

It wasn’t until two thirds into the show, into candy and onion rings and punchiness, that I realized I hadn’t seen Ava DuVernay. I was shocked, but when I brought it up, nobody else had seen her either. She’d just not been on camera. I mean, it’s a director, not an actress. Full Story

Idris Elba was in Berlin yesterday at the Jaguar presentation. Isn’t that a Bond car? Or a villain car? Aston Martin is the Bond car, right? Whatever. I needed to make a Bond connection there. And he says he’s not Bond…yet: “It’s really just a rumor—and it’s not even my rumor!” Idris went on to tell Bloomberg Full Story
