Over the weekend, the two biggest guilds held their award ceremonies. The Screen Actors Guild televises their ceremony, so everyone saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri win their top prize, pushing it to the head of the pack. Right? Well, not so fast. Because over at the Producers Guild of America, they gave their top prize to The Shape of Water. Full Story

James Franco was not nominated for Best Actor Oscar this morning. And it’s not like he had an outside chance. Many experts, up to two weeks ago (and even still yesterday), had James on their prediction lists believing that most Academy members had voted before James’s sexual harassment situation blew up. Full Story

Not perfect, but better. The Oscar nominations this morning got it mostly right, recognizing films we expected—The Shape of Water, Three Billboards, Dunkirk, Call Me By Your Name—films we didn’t—Logan and The Big Sick—and films we feared would be overlooked, like Mudbound and Get Out, which had to climb streaming and genre hurdles, respectively. Full Story

The first part of the Oscar nominations this morning, when they announced many of the technical categories, featured vignettes to highlight the work that goes into editing and sound and costuming and cinematography etc. Each vignette was fronted by a woman, a diverse range of women beginning with Gal Gadot and also including Salma Hayek, Zoe Saldana, Priyanka Chopra, Rebel Wilson, Molly Shannon, Michelle Rodriguez, Michelle Yeoh, and Rosario Dawson. Full Story

Greta Gerwig accepted the National Board of Review Award for Best Director last night in New York for Lady Bird. Lady Bird won the Best Film Comedy/Musical Golden Globe on Sunday. It was nominated for 3 BAFTAs yesterday (though not in the best film or directing categories) and, as you know, it’s expected to be an Oscar contender when the nominations are announced later this month. Full Story
