Matthew McConaughey: The Comeback Kid

Lainey Posted by Lainey at February 19, 2014 15:41:02 February 19, 2014 15:41:02

Last week it was Leonardo DiCaprio who covered Variety for a very well played interview about his career choices and body of work. Leo’s message to Oscar voters: I don’t have to come back. I never left. I’ve always been The One. And now it’s Matthew McConaughey’s turn with the image he’s been pushing for 6 months now: the Comeback Kid. Full Story

Judi Dench was the only Best Actress nominee who did not attend the Nominees Luncheon yesterday. I love that about her. She’s the only one who doesn’t actually give a sh-t. The others most definitely do give a sh-t. Doesn’t mean we can’t love them but we can also say they give a sh-t, right? Cate Blanchett gives a sh-t. Full Story

Lupita holds it down

Chiwetel Ejiofor was not at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon yesterday. Michael Fassbender wasn’t either. And Brad Pitt was absent too. So it was left to Lupita Nyong’o to represent 12 Years A Slave as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress. She’s the film’s only sure thing as Ejiofor sits a distant third, if that, behind Matthew McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor, Fassbender won’t stand up, and the movie’s in a tight fight for Best Picture. Full Story

Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill, 2x Oscar nominee and friend of Marty, Leo, and Brange, were together again this weekend to honour Martin Scorsese at the Art Directors Guild Awards in Beverly Hills. Leo’s been stepping up the campaigning in LA. It might not be as obvious but you don’t think he’ll let Matthew McConaughey just walk away with it, do you? So, what’s the strategy? To me, the thing about Matthew McConaughey is that he keeps playing the same characters over and over again. Full Story

They’re back in LA! Here they are, all 8 of them, arriving at LAX after spending a couple of months in Australia where the Jolie was directing Unbroken. And we just happen to be inside a month until the Oscars… Where 12 Years A Slave is nominated for Best Picture. This is good. Full Story

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt went out for dinner last night in Australia looking sexier than they’ve looked in a while. I mean, her footwear says it all. Those are shoes that demand a bottle of wine, or several. And not giving a sh-t what time the kids go to bed. OK then. Is it coming? Is the Pitt Porn on the way for award season when it really matters? Because it’s been too f-cking long. Full Story

Jeremy Renner was at the SAG Awards, nominated for best ensemble along with the rest of the cast for American Hustle. Let’s take a moment to celebrate a victory over his Shiny Suit Problem—he looked great in a non-shiny pewter tux (so great that Rita Moreno hit on him during her lifetime achievement speech). Full Story

Finally. Brad Pitt showed up in LA on Friday. He attended the SAG Awards to support his film 12 Years A Slave on Saturday. It was the surging American Hustle that took home the Best Ensemble Award that night. Last night, however, at the Producers Guild Awards, an unprecedented tie: 12 Years A Slave and Gravity both won Best Picture. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Lupita! So gracious, so charming, so popular – easily the most popular last night at the Critics’ Choice Awards as everyone wanted a moment with her…because Lupita Nyong’o is definitely having a moment right now.  Read Full Intro

Portrait session for The Monuments Men yesterday. George Clooney put a political message on under a leather jacket. But he’s been overshadowed. By Cate Blanchett? No. Not even Cate Blanchett. Bill Murray. Please enjoy his pink pants. It’s award season and George Clooney’s in a film – Gravity – that is in contention for Best Picture. Full Story

Alright, alright, alright… It’s not really a song. But everyone seems to be singing it. And wanting to hear it. And we heard it last night when he won Best Drama Actor at Critics’ Choice, presented by Jessica Chastain, who threw out an “alright, alright, alright” when she opened the envelope and announced his name. Full Story
