As mentioned earlier, several major Oscar contenders attended the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Saturday to accept awards but, mostly, to campaign for an Oscar nomination. Palm Springs has a great recent record of honouring those who go on to Oscar consideration so, even though they require their award recipients to show up in exchange for the recognition, everyone knows that, unlike, say, the Hollywood Film Awards, these ones actually mean something. Full Story

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association went with Will Smith over Johnny Depp for Best Actor Drama at the Golden Globes. Normally those starf-ckers are all up in Johnny’s ass. Maybe they’re over his scarves. I’m curious though to know how much international press, like proper interviews, he did for Black Mass and whether or not that had anything to do with it. Full Story

The Hollywood Reporter has released their directors roundtable, which includes Tom Hooper, Danny Boyle, David O. Russell, Ridley Scott, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Quentin Tarantino. That’s quite a mix of people, several of whom have reputations for being, let’s call it “exacting” in their process. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

I’m buzzy today. It’s a combination of Christmas and award season excitement. The SAG nominations came down yesterday. The Golden Globe nominations just happened this morning. The Globes are just a month away.  Read Full Intro

This is what I mean when I say I’m torn. Because I love Idris. But this won’t be Idris’s only opportunity, only award season. For Sylvester Stallone as Rocky, well, it’s not going to happen again. And so far it’s my favourite story of award season, as you know, because I can’t shut up about it. Full Story

Carol led the way with 5 Golden Globe nominations this morning. The Big Short, The Revenant, and Steve Jobs are in with 4. The Martian has 3. And Spotlight has 3. But no actors from Spotlight were singled out. The SAGs only nominated Rachel McAdams from that cast yesterday. Is that a concern for the film that was considered the frontrunner earlier this week? Or maybe, if they position it right, that will actually help the film? That no one person is more important than the story. Full Story

No Johnny Depp. Unlike the Screen Actors Guild, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association went with Will Smith over Johnny Depp for the Golden Globes. They’re starf-ckers, as you know, the HFPA. But between the stars to f-ck, they chose Will even though they’ve made a joke of themselves in the past by nominating Johnny for The Tourist, remember that? I don’t know if that’s going to carry through to the Oscars, but what’s important to note here is that a formidable challenger has emerged for Leonardo DiCaprio. Full Story

Leonardo DiCaprio, one step closer. As expected, he secured a Screen Actors Guild Nomination today for Best Actor along with Johnny Depp, Michael Fassbender, and Eddie Redmayne. As for that fifth spot… Bryan Cranston over Matt Damon and Will Smith. SAG loves Bryan Cranston. They’ve awarded him for Walter White and Breaking Bad. Full Story

It was announced today that Alicia Vikander will receive the Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival in January. As you know, Alicia’s being positioned for an Oscar nomination for her work in The Danish Girl and she’s shown up on several critics’ lists as one of the best of the year though it remains to be seen how her chances will be affected by the category controversy between supporting and lead. Full Story

Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio were in London together yesterday at a BAFTA screening for The Revenant. All we hear from The Revenant is about Leo’s performance. And even though many experts are predicting that Tom will be recognised for his work with a Best Supporting Actor nomination, Leo’s been eating up all the headlines related to the film with all his meat eating, bear f-cking Full Story
