Actors take jobs. Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor, and he’s just taken a job portraying the tiger Shere Khan in Andy Serkis’s Jungle Book (not to be confused with Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book). If all you care about is that Benedict Cumberbatch’s voice will be coming out of a tiger’s mouth, then great, this is your money shot, stop reading. Full Story

Comic-Con is in full swing and yesterday Benedict Cumberbatch kicked it off in good old fashion convention style—thousands of screaming girls yelling his name in an enclosed space. Actually, I’m trying to remember if Comic-Con was like this in the pre-Twilight days. While I remember plenty of excitable nerds, Twilight brought fangirls, which I don’t really remember before 2008. In 2011 the Black List was topped by a script for a biopic of Alan Turing, the computer scientist who developed the early computer that the British used to break the German’s Enigma code. You might also recognize his name from the Turing Test, a series of questions meant to determine if a machine is capable of fooling a human interrogator into thinking it’s human. Full Story
Prince William hosted an event last night for the Royal Marsden and all kinds of celebrities were there, including Cate Blanchett, Kate Moss, Ralph Lauren and family, and Benedict Cumberbatch. At one point Kate Moss asked him about Kate Middleton. He told her she wasn’t coming and Moss’s reply was, “Such a shame”. Full Story
TIME has released its annual list of 100 Most Influential People. The categories are: Titans, Pioneers, Artists, Leaders, Icons. So who’s a Titan?
Beyonce, of course.
To me, what’s been most interesting on this list isn’t necessarily who’s on it but the people who are chosen or have volunteered to write the piece that accompanies the entry. Beyonce’s, for example, was written by Sheryl Sandberg. Pharrell, who is also a Titan, was honoured by Justin Timberlake – who did it last year for Jimmy Fallon and made it all about himself (click here for a refresher). JT managed to restrain his ego this time.
Under the Icon category, we find…Carrie Underwood. Read Full Intro

One of our producers had a seat in the bleachers this year, taking pictures and Instagram video as part of our social media team. This is the text she sent me around noon: “I’m sitting with the MiniVan Majority.” When Benedict Cumberbatch arrived, no one in her section of the bleachers knew who he was. Full Story

Here’s my Valentine gift to those of you who are fans of Benedict Cumberbatch – his double thumbs! Bendy was in New York yesterday for the BAFTA New York Presents: In Conversation With Benedict Cumberbatch. So what did they talk about? Well, given that he’s really “internet-famous”, as Sarah calls it, how come he doesn’t use social media? “It would take over my life and probably ruin it. Full Story
Benedict Cumberbatch went on Sesame Street and did a math bit with Murray and the Count. It’s cute, I guess. I don’t have any fond nostalgia for Sesame Street—I only remember watching it at school when it was raining and we couldn’t go outside at recess—so I have no real opinion about celebrities going on the show beyond it is a thing that they do and I bet taping a segment with any combination of Sesame Street/Muppets characters is probably loads of fun. Benedict Cumberbatch was enjoying himself at the SAG Awards. I mean that sincerely, no side-eye. Every time I caught a glimpse of him in the audience, he was smiling and laughing, sitting at the 12 Years a Slave table but making time for his August: Osage County co-stars, too. It had to feel nice, being a double nominee as part of the 12 Years and Osage County ensembles—it’s a positive footnote to the year that didn’t go quite as originally planned Full Story

Certain corners of the internet have been damp down there after seeing this photo of Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Fassbender getting down at the FOX after-party on Sunday night following the Golden Globes celebrating the Best Drama win for 12 Years A Slave. I would be damp if Chiwetel Ejiofor was in the shot. Full Story
Reader Jackie sent an email this morning about Benedict Cumberbatch that basically boiled down to, “Benedict Cumberbatch seems to be skating along the edge of other people’s bad decisions, so when does that become a problem for him?” (Emphasis mine). Her examples: playing a white-washed role in Star Trek Into Darkness (Khan, who, it should be noted, has never been played by an Indian actor), the whole Fifth Estate Full Story
Of John’s comedy mustache. It’s T-minus forty days until Sherlock series 3 premieres in the US, or, as I like to put it, T-minus twenty-two days until we all pirate it (“The Empty Hearse” is scheduled to air on New Year’s Day in the UK). Why do they insist on this window between airings? Do they actually think we’re going to wait three whole weeks to learn how Sherlock survived The Fall? Because while John may say he doesn’t care how, only why, we, the audience, already know why (to save you, John!). Full Story
The Hollywood Reporter put Benedict Cumberbatch on the cover a few months ago, declaring him officially part of the A List. Click here to read Sarah’s piece at the time. All signs did indeed point, then, to it being the Year of Cumberbatch, especially since The Fifth Estate was about to screen at TIFF and everyone was already talking Oscar. Full Story

Maybe it’s because I’ve been listening to the words “eat pussy” come out of Rob Ford’s mouth all morning but suddenly everything seems brighter, nicer, easier to look at. Seth Meyers is apparently strongly considering making it a sketch on Saturday Night Live this weekend. Full Story
