Intro for August 17, 2016
I read the saddest article yesterday. And, because I’m a dick, I’m sharing it with you. It’s about your end of summer song. We talk all the time about the song of the summer and summer playlists – here’s mine, what I call Music To F-ck To. But what about the song that always marks for you that summer is nearly over? Do you have one? Do you save it until exactly the right time to play it?
For Marc Spitz, it’s Don Henley’s Boys Of Summer (a great song, a f-cking classic, the kind of song that plays in your car at 2am and suddenly you’re crying and you don’t know why) and he writes about when it’s “safe and appropriate to play this quintessential August song”. I do get the feels when I hear Boys Of Summer but it’s not my end of summer song. My end of summer song is way less cool and totally corny but I will defend it to the end: (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, as IF I had to tell you that.
I used to spend every summer in Hong Kong with my ma when my parents were divorced, coming home in August a couple of weeks ahead of the start of the school year. In 1987, my best friend was Natasha. As soon as I got off the plane, she came over and shouted, “WE HAVE TO GO TO DIRTY DANCING!” We went to the mall and saw it twice that day, twice the next day, and 3 more times after that until Labour Day. From then on, The Time Of My Life has been my end of summer song.
Today is August 17th. I swear I had no idea before I sat down to write this open but Dirty Dancing premiered on August 17th, 1987. It must mean something, right? So, I guess, with a little melancholy and a lot of nostalgia, I’m playing The Time Of My Life.
What’s your end of summer song? Also, are you mad at me for totally bumming you out?
Yours in gossip,
