Deadpool had a crazy weekend at the box office, destroying every record for February no matter which way you slice it—opening day, single day, Thursday preview, R-rated debut, the four-day President’s Day weekend frame. As previously mentioned in the Kerry Washington post, Reese Witherspoon is featured in Entertainment Weekly’s Beyond Beautiful article and drops a blind riddle about opportunities for women in Hollywood: “About four years ago I got sent an awful, terrible script. And this male star was starring in it, and there was a girlfriend part. Full Story

An interesting bit of news came out yesterday that back in October film industry insiders held a two-day think tank to brainstorm ways to promote the interests of women in the industry. The think tank was led by a “facilitation team” who has done similar work for companies like Google and NBCUniversal—one of the few movie studios openly dedicated to diversity (see also: Fast/Furious, Straight Outta Compton, Pitch Perfect, Trainwreck, Fifty Shades of Grey). Full Story

It was announced yesterday that Rihanna has launched Fr8me, her own style and beauty agency. Per THR, Fr8me “assists artists in booking commercials, editorial shoots, ad campaigns and red-carpet gigs”. Several hair and makeup and fashion stylists have already signed on, including Rihanna’s own team. Full Story

It’s been a Gwyneth-heavy week, month, year. There is no going underground for months at a time when there are jumpsuits to sell. This week, Gwyneth attended the Fast Company Innovation Festival (pics here) – Fast Company, a “leading progressive business media brand”, has been supportive of Goop. Full Story

Yesterday The Hollywood Reporter released their studio executive roundtable, an hour-long conversation between the heads of five out of six of the Big Six studios, plus Lionsgate’s Rob Friedman. (Why is Warner Brothers not here?) Of the six execs, two are women—Universal’s Donna Langley, and Fox’s Stacey Snider. Full Story

The last time we talked about Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s HBO revival of Project Greenlight, it was about #mattsplaining and Damon’s dumb remarks about diversity hiring on a film set, which he directed at Effie Brown, an African-American producer. Full Story

As mentioned in today’s blog intro, the new Lenny newsletter includes an essay by Jennifer Lawrence called Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co-Stars? This is Jennifer Lawrence, the highest paid actress in Hollywood. Oscar winner. Multiple Oscar nominee. Katniss. Mystique. And she’s still not on the level. Full Story

Tom Hardy ain’t got time for primadonna directors

FJRNEWZ/ Splash News

Tom Hardy gave an interview, via Skype, to Vulture and in it he sh*ts all over the idea of directors and basically says they contribute nothing to film. I laughed for a solid five minutes, because cinema is a culture that worships directors and also because Tom Hardy basically just declared to all future employers that he doesn’t really respect what they do. Full Story
