Cate Blanchett: Globes Best Acid Tongue

First of all, she looked flawless. I don’t think that Cate Blanchett isn’t aging, and I don’t think that she never does anything. She looks, to me, like she has very small amounts of very good work done periodically and gives it a chance to settle into her face. I may be giving her too much credit or too little, based on people who find their way into this business because they just don’t age (did you see Rob Lowe??) but she looks great. And that Armani Prive dress was great.

It wasn’t about the looks last night though. It was about being generally awesome. Cate started early. She told Leonardo DiCaprio, within full range of the parabolic microphone on Ryan Seacrest’s island of gentle interrogation, that she hated every second of her interview. She could have been making a joke that we were all allowed to hear, but come on. She made short work of the musical cues, mocking them openly on TV for the absolute trainwreck that they were. And she continued to be kind of otherworldly, saying the word “barbiturates” in a room where I’m sure most of the people don’t know whether they’ve heard that word before.

She’s not warm, though, and she’s not necessarily endearing. She’s made a whole career of playing women who are neither warm nor endearing. Since every article in the past two weeks has been about whether female characters need to be likeable, she’s kind of a unicorn, isn’t she? She can work without having to knock off edges. She can win things on merit, not winsomeness. It’s an understated skill.
