Everly Tatum

It’s my own fault, you know.

I’m the one who’s always on about unusual names and how we shouldn’t just go to the same well over and over again.

And to that end, it is worth noting that we’re not writing about Channing Tatum’s daughter being called a Sophia or an Isabella.  So, I mean, we have to be happy about that. I know you think I beat those names to death but they’re still numbers one and two. Still?!

But I’m not going to pretend to be thrilled with the name Everly.

I…really? To me, it’s a fake name. It’s a “pretty” name. It’s a name that hopes its owner will be the most popular girl in class and that everyone will covet her smelly erasers.* It just doesn’t scream substance to me. Ever. Everly.  The name “Ever” is already an adverb, and then you make it a descriptor of that adverb? I don’t know.

I just don’t get why. It feels ethereal or special? So does Giselle. So does Amari. It’s a family name that’s been passed down? This is a possibility, for all I know the Dewans and the Tatums both have lots of Everlys in their family. I still think you could put “Ramona” in front of it and it would feel more substantial.

I don’t – I mean, there’s nothing to hate. But it’s a short slope from Everly to Bryleigh. Don’t try to tell me they’re different.

*Kids don’t have these anymore, do they?  Sigh.
