Chiwetel > Leo
Matthew McConaughey was not a factor in the Best Actor category at the BAFTAs. So it was Chiwetel Ejiofor vs Leonardo DiCaprio. Chiwetel won. And I wish he could win at the Oscars on March 2. Because as I’ve already said and will repeat again: Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club is basically Matthew McConaughey in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, just 40 lbs lighter. And forgive me if I don’t buy that it would be a stretch for Leonardo DiCaprio to play a morally questionable hard partier. If Leo was nominated for The Great Gatsby this season, in my mind there’d be more of a fight. But the only part of The Wolf Of Wall Street that impressed me at all was Jonah Hill, 2X Oscar nominee and friend of Marty, Leo, and Brange. Now you know how I feel about Jonah Hill, 2X Oscar nominee and friend of Marty, Leo, and Brange. That should tell you how I feel about that film.
When it comes down to it though, it’s what Academy members would have seen or are willing to see. There’s nothing fun or comforting or “entertaining” about 12 Years A Slave. There are no orgies. There is no dwarf-tossing. There are breasts, but those breasts are at the receiving end of a whip and not a tongue. Debauchery is not celebrated. Greed is not celebrated. Humanity is on trial. Of course Hollywood would have a hard time confronting that.
