Madonna is an old legend

This is what I wrote when it was just a rumour that Madonna would be headlining the Super Bowl half-time show:
“The people who watch the Super Bowl for the actual Super Bowl will watch the Super Bowl no matter who’s performing at the half. They want the people who might not otherwise watch the Super Bowl to be watching the Super Bowl. If I’m Madonna though, I’m wondering whether or not I want to join The Who, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty - all past Super Bowl performers post Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake tit-flash (which he was a total pussy about and never had her back) of a certain, um, generation. You know how Madonna feels about being part of that, um, generation, right? After all, look at her face.”
Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty - they’re great, and they’re legends. They’re also very safe. They’re not exactly...provocative. Or, for that matter, contemporary. They’ve built their legacies, they take a sh-t and stand ovation ensues. They’ve also accepted their status without a fight, in the form of a needle.
For the last few years, Madonna has been fronting like she can keep up with Gaga and Rihanna. That she is still relevant, still dangerous, still controversial. That she still belongs in the same conversation with the Modern Artist. With the boyfriends and the face fillers, Madonna, some would say, has demonstrated a reluctance to accept her age. So this half-time show she has planned...
How will it be?
Because if you’ve been to her recent shows, she doesn’t want to do her classics the way we remember and love them. She keeps dance groove beating like it’s 1985. A greatest hits Super Bowl show starring Madonna? I am ALL OVER it. But a half-time show featuring her new jams? From the new album that’s being planned for 2012? I can’t say I’m all that enthusiastic.
Give me Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Borderline, Cherish, Open Your Heart, etc, etc, etc, all the way they were originally intended. Then she’ll be my girl. Then I will be hers.
Attached - Madonna at the W.E. premiere last night in New York. Valentino, Anderson Cooper, Harvey Weinstein, Chloe Sevigny, Olivia Palermo, and Michelle Trachtenberg were there...
Olivia Palermo and Michelle Trachtenberg?
What happened to all her real celebrity friends?
