How Is This Girl Unsigned?

Girls Season 3 Episode 11 recap I continue to feel like this is the first season that Girls wanted to have. The things they’re dealing with are quasi-standard fare for a show like this, it’s just that it took this long to do them well. I want to be mad at some of those floundering first efforts but how can I when we’ve arrived here? Girls has somehow managed to show the unending indignity of feeling like you’re a creative person while not actually being a creative person for a day job. Full Story

I’m Afraid To Eat The Green Part

Girls Season 3 Episode 10 recap Unlike the last couple of episodes, which I hope weren’t aberrations, I don’t have as much to rhapsodize on this episode. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bad – in fact some parts were really affecting – but it didn’t feel like it was as comfortably saying something new as the previous two weeks’ episodes. Full Story

Girls Season 3 Episode 9 recap How dare you make me emotional, Girls. How dare you offer up something fine and nuanced about one of the worst parts of adulthood – watching your parents become both more wise and more flawed at the same time. This is not what we signed up for. Where’s the coke and awkward blowjobs? For the second time this season I’m about to anoint this episode the best one Girls has ever done. Full Story

“Patti LuPone F*cked With My Head”

Girls Season 3 Episode 8 recap Okay. First, credit where credit is due. Before there was Mrs. Coach – before those long, luscious locks were no nonsense with the “look at the choices you are makin’” – there was Patti LuPone, Libby Thatcher from “Life Goes On”, if you have that memory, which means we might not be young. Full Story

That’s not what inertia means

Girls Season 3 Episode 7 recap Girls, can you stop getting me to like you? That was not supposed to be my thing, okay? Remember back in the day, when you were trite and I was crotchety? This was your best episode ever, okay? Is that condescending of me? Girls wastes no time this week pointing out that it owes a debt – that it’s happy to pay, to overextend the metaphor – to Sex And The City, which only had a few episodes in the Hamptons, really, but felt like it was there every episode. Full Story

Principles For Lunch

Girls Season 3 Episode 6 recap The way these things usually work is that we start with the big stuff and then roll down to little observations, but I have to point out that the moment I fell in love with Marnie and Ray as a duo was when I saw them on the street and found out she’s half his size and wearing a bicycle sweatshirt. Full Story

No Good Horrible Very Bad Day

Girls Season 3 Episode 5 recap. Let’s assume I’m not a perfect person. Maybe even not a great person. Subjective, of course, based on a million factors – but let’s say that’s true. Does it mean that I can, or I can’t, identify other people who are imperfect? People who have problems?  This is the rather well-done theme of this week’s episode of Girls, and I couldn’t help but notice that the episode was written by one person, directed by another, and neither of those was Lena Dunham, who instead turned in the best performance I’ve seen her do in a single episode. Full Story

Girls Season 3 Episode 4 recap Okay, well, now I know why Jessa’s back. Not that there was ever any danger – it’s actually a really nice thing that despite anything we complain about, there’s no fractious recasting or infighting on Girls – but the character is back for a very specific purpose. Full Story

Girls Season 3 Episode 3 (with some nods to 1 & 2) recap Well, it happened. It’s inevitable. They wore me down, GIRLS. Or maybe Lena Dunham did. It’s so hard to tell, because they’re so inextricably one and the same.   But somewhere along the way in the last break between Season 2 and now (or last week, yes, there were some Globes, OK?) something in the conversation changed. Full Story

Lena Dunham covers Marie Claire UK

Lena Dunham is on the cover of Marie Claire UK. I have zero expertise in magazine covers, like I don’t know what makes one sell or not, but this doesn’t appeal to me at all. It’s awkward, right? Still, I think it’s cool that she’s on the cover, and the angle they’re taking is, if not exactly new (AT ALL) , still nice to hear from her. Full Story

What a relief it is to see Lena Dunham having the time of her life at the TIME gala! This lady gets so much grief for her work, her tweets, her body and, as a 26 year old show runner, she must be under the kind of pressure I hope I never come to understand. But you wouldn’t know any of that as she kisses Claire Danes on the red carpet, parties with Padma, Amy, and Mia and genuinely looks like she’s just up for a good f*cking time. Full Story
