Idris Elba was Netflix’s best chance at an Oscar nomination for Beasts Of No Nation. But the Academy isn’t ready yet for Netflix to come and f-ck up the order of the film industry. He was left off the list of Best Supporting Actors.
When Straight Outta Compton was called for Best Original Screenplay, I thought, OMG, Compton will make Best Picture! Nope. No Compton. And besides, the Compton screenwriters? They’re white. All the acting nominees are white. The most prominent non-white nomination: The Weeknd for Earned It in the Best Original Song category for Fifty Shades Of Grey. Basically Fifty Shades Of Grey received the same number of Oscar nominations as Straight Outta Compton and more than Beasts Of No Nation.
No Nation, no Compton, but definitely straight. White and straight.
If you’re Canadian though, we’ve been represented. In addition to Abel’s nomination, Emma Donoghue is now an Oscar nominee for adapting her book into a movie, and Rachel McAdams is contending for Best Supporting Actress. We’ll get to Rachel later. Also, as Joanna pointed out to me a few minutes ago, 4 out of the 8 Best Picture nominees were filmed in Canada: Brooklyn, The Revenant, Room, and Spotlight.
