Intro for August 19, 2013
Ashton Kutcher’s jOBS opened in 7th place this weekend in wide release earning only $6.7 million, an official box office bomb. As Deadline’s Nikki Finke noted, “Ashton just isn’t a movie star, period”.
You could say the same of Liam Hemsworth and Amber Heard. Their Paranoia did even worse, opening embarrassingly in 13th with $3.5 million. And the reviews! As of this writing, it’s at 4% on Rotten Tomatoes which is LOWER THAN GROWN UPS 2. How sh-t are you when your reviews suck harder than Grown Ups 2? Why not blame Harrison Ford? Sure. We could. But the faces that were being pimped for Paranoia were Hemsworth and Heard. They were all over the place, both of them trying to promote the movie without promoting the fact that they’re involved with two very famous people, even though Miley Cyrus showed up for Hemsworth at the premiere and, now that I think of it, Heard conveniently was photographed holding hands with Johnny Depp all over Asia and Europe just a couple of weeks before her big push for Paranoia. Hemsworth still has Catching Fire to redeem his year but Heard’s now in yet another movie that no one cared about. Maybe it’s time for a Career Prospectus.
The Butler’s #1 finish confirms its status now as an Oscar contender.
