Intro for January 15, 2014
Oscar nominations come down tomorrow morning. Some are predicting that 12 Years A Slave could be up for as many as 13 awards. Gold Derby thinks it’s between that film, American Hustle, and Gravity – and that if Hustle comes through in all 4 acting categories, it could be “the one to beat”.
Or, you know, David O Russell could beat himself. David O Russell used to be the guy who George Clooney had by the throat for being such a dick on the set of Three Kings. And he was the guy who went bananas on Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees. Now he’s the guy who’s describing Jennifer Lawrence’s commitment to The Hunger Games franchise as slavery:
“I personally think they should give her a bit of breathing room over there because they’re printing money. But she’s a very alive person. I’ll tell you what it is about that girl -- talk about 12 years of slavery, that’s what the franchise is. And I’m going to get in so much trouble for saying that. It was a vacation for her to dive into [her 'American Hustle' character] in the middle of all the other work as Katniss Everdeen [her 'Hunger Games' character]." – as told to the NY Daily News (Source)
He has since apologised. Of course. We toss off apologies these days like sunflower seeds. But how patronising, non? It’s offensive, obviously. Offensive and gross and really, really patronising. Jennifer Lawrence can’t take care of Jennifer Lawrence? Why is it up to him to decide how much Jennifer Lawrence can handle?
And I LIKED American Hustle. A lot! Way more than I liked Silver Linings Playbook!
More analysis on the nominations after 9am tomorrow. But God, Brange, when are you getting to work?!?
