Intro for July 30, 2013
Thanks for understanding about our day off yesterday as we made our way across our final four states – Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. We are safely installed in Toronto now after a steady diet of McDonald’s and Subway. A Sausage McMuffin, no egg, with a hash brown has been my lifelong weakness. You know why? It’s my dad. It was the drive-through when I was young, maybe just 7 or 8, on Saturdays on our way to my ballet lesson. The ballet didn’t last. But there’s something about a McDonald’s morning that always reminds me of dad. He used to sit in his car outside the studio, waiting for me to be done with my pliés, the only father on the ballet run among all the mothers, back when single fathers weren’t quite as common. Two weeks ago, Dad was weeding our front lawn in the blazing sun so our new neighbours won’t judge us for being the sh-t house on the block. He’ll be over a lot on the weekends helping Jacek in the yard. And I suspect he’ll probably bring over a Sausage McMuffin, no egg, with a hash brown. As for the Squawking Chicken, God help me, she’s practically moved in. When we arrived yesterday there were fine metal strainers in every sink, the kind you buy at the Chinese market, because the western alternatives are way too expensive and don’t actually work as well. This is a Chinese thing – in addition to never taking the plastic wrap off our furniture, we are also excessively paranoid about clogged pipes. I think it’s something to do with luck-blocking. Which, I mean, I wish it was that easy with, you know, that problem with my own internal pipes. Is that ironic?
So what did I miss?
Working on a heavy blog to make up for yesterday. Thanks again for your patience.
Yours in gossip,
