Intro for June 12, 2013
Three years ago, exactly, my copy of Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century arrived in the mail. I was obsessed, obviously. I opened the blog that day with a story about how Elizabeth menstrual cycle was written into her contracts -- she didn’t bother coming to work if she was on her period, and she was paid for it. That’s 10 Beyonces multiplied by 10 Mariah Careys, you know what I mean?
Furious Love chronicled, in wonderfully gossipy detail, what went down on the set of Cleopatra -- the passion, the drama, the tears, the drinking -- when Liz met Dick and left Eddie. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Cleopatra, LIFE went into their archives and has republished some rare photos of the two on set together along with old reporter notes observing how it was between them. What’s perhaps even more fascinating are the reprinted pages from the magazine’s coverage of the Taylor-Burton affair in its April 13, 1962 issue. The sarcasm. The judgment. The snark. It’s a tone they wouldn’t dare adopt now. I’ve lost an hour already this morning on the pictures and the text. Just a warning. Click here to see.
Yours in gossip,
