Intro for October 4, 2013
“Are we gladiators, or are we bitches?”
What we are, here, on Scandal, is so f-cking EXTRA. Unapologetically EXTRA. Wonderfully, amazingly, all caps all the time EXTRA. Please never let it stop. Scandal is the Mariah Carey of TV shows. And the key to being the Mariah Carey of TV shows is part self-awareness, part self-celebration, and part self-ordained. It’s not like Shonda Rhimes doesn’t know that her sh-t is bananas. She is revelling in how bananas this sh-t is. And there’s no explanation for it other than to say…it’s meant to be this way. Like destiny.
Right now, no other show gives me as much pure, decadent joy. And it almost feels like the writers, they are writing it with joy. Can you imagine writing this line? Can you imagine how much fun it would be to write this line? And then to see it being played out on television!?
“You are getting on that plane come hell or high water. And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water.”
It’s ridiculous. It’s totally f-cking absurd. And somehow it works. Somehow they manage in the absurdity to find a cellular level of restraint that keeps it primetime as opposed to daytime. This is unsung brilliance, seriously.
If you’re not a believer yet, here’s my weekend recommendation – mainline Scandal. You won’t regret it when you come out the other side.
