Jake Gyllenhaal will most likely be in Toronto in a few weeks for the world premiere of Stronger at TIFF. There’s a lot of hype around his performance. He’s already being talked about as a possible contender for a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Full Story

First and most important the “animal endangerment” warning: Okja can be hard to watch. While it’s not as bloody as it could be, it’s frank about the slaughterhouse and the treatment of animals raised to slaughter in agri-business abattoirs. It’s not exploitative, but there are a couple scenes that could be tough if you’re sensitive to animals in danger. Full Story

Netflix has two films at Cannes and Netflix has been the source of all the bitching at the festival because they’re insisting on theatrical release for eligibility; the new rules take effect next year. If they were in place this year, Okja, Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated new film, would not be included. Full Story

Life is a terribly stupid movie, but it’s dumb in that fun B-movie way, a trashy space thriller full of dumb-sh*t dialogue and wildly convenient circumstances. Despite its stupidity, though, Life is decently scary because space is naturally horrifying as we are instinctively afraid of its vastness and convinced that some wet-looking space bug is going to rise from its depths to destroy us. Full Story
