Kate Hudson: Oscars Standby
Kate Hudson is a staple at the Vanity Fair Oscar party – it’s the biggest party night of the year, and even though she hasn’t been nominated since 2001, Kate is not George Clooney. She’s not skipping the party just because she doesn’t have a concrete reason to be there. It’s a big party! That itself is a reason to show up.
So here she is in kind of a peachy nude. What is this non-colour? I don’t quite know, it’s a bit of a wash, particularly in this material. Plunging! Kate loves a plunge -- collectively, we’ve seen her clavicle dozens of times. It’s Cavalli through and through.
Besides PLUNGING! there’s sheerness in the upper thigh, lace, a strappy back and peplum. It’s a mash-up of things we’ve seen her in over and over – she didn’t agonize over this choice. This dress is Kate Hudson brand management.
Her styling here – the big earrings and the high hair, from certain angles it reminds me a bit of a knock-off Charlize. Not that Kate wants to be Charlize. Charlize is serious (about everything) – her gowns, her work, her interviews. Kate is there to have FUN and schmooze and walk around parties arranging her social calendar. It’s not social climbing because she’s at the top of the heap in LA. It’s more calendar maintenance.
Kate is a perfect party guest in that she always looks like she really wants to be on that red carpet and is really excited to dance and drink champagne. This dress was not meant to be memorable or attention grabbing, it was meant to say “Yes of course I’m up for karaoke with Mariah or the selfie booth Jessica Alba. I’m Kate Hudson! Let’s get a group shot.”
