We’ve been seeing a lot of one-shoulders lately. It will likely continue through award season.  Last night, Salma Hayek and Selma Blair both worked the one-shoulder at the W Magazine pre-Golden Globes party. Any preference?  Both are caped, Salma’s is fringed, but Selma’s has a the added collar feature and is still much more spare. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Mental and physical health in 2018

Hayley Posted by Hayley at January 4, 2018 20:10:37 January 4, 2018 20:10:37

For this first post of 2018 I’m sharing my fitness journey, because I think it is important to understand that life is a journey and it is forever changing. What works for us at one point in our lives may not work for us at another. Fitness for me began early. I don’t know why I was born so competitive but from as far back as I can remember I always had to win. Full Article

Duana Names: Jack (Jackie? Jacqueline?) Of All Names…

Duana Posted by Duana at January 3, 2018 21:37:36 January 3, 2018 21:37:36

Hi Duana, I absolutely love your column and baby name advice - if I ever have any baby name questions your column will be the first place I go! This, however, is not about any future children. This is about my, and my fiancé's, married names. Here is the situation (and apologies for the long email) – simply put, I want to share a last name with my fiancé and our possible future children. Full Article

Though it’s not an exact science, as I’ve mentioned, I try to answer name questions before the due dates of the arrivals, if that’s practical. But sometimes things get more complicated than that. Here’s an email I got in August: Hi Duana,  We are expecting our second boy early in the new year. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Happy Holidays from Hayley

Hayley Posted by Hayley at December 21, 2017 16:45:39 December 21, 2017 16:45:39

I wanted to finish this year off with a letter to you and a recap of what I feel is the most important lesson we learned in 2017.  With the ongoing LaineyGossip theme of Show Your Work and the ever strong #metoo movement that took the end of the year by storm, I feel it is important to remind ourselves that we are all deserving. Full Article

Carpets & Candids: Kristen’s one-shoulder black and white

It’s been hit or miss with Kristen Wiig on the red carpet for me lately. More misses, I think.  This black and white one-shoulder dress, however, is a safe hit. Safe because, to me, it’s impossible not to like it. There’s nothing to offend here. And the feature I appreciate most is that the print doesn’t go right up to the edge of the slant that’s created by the one-shoulder feature. Full Article

Duana Names: In Which I Have To Hold Back The Title

Hi Duana, I am expecting our second child and while I had every intention to get feedback with the first, he made his debut a month early and I was still fully in denial I was to become a mother. He went nameless for 2 days in the hospital however we chose Simon William. We had it narrowed to Sebastian, Simon, Gabriel or Arthur (too weird with our last name) but truly, the list wasn't that short until a day after he was born and the shock had subsided. Full Article

Hi Duana, We are in desperate need of name advice for our second baby girl, due in December! I'm Indian, and my husband is American, and while I'd like a name that works in both contexts, I think it's more important that we just love the name. We were easily able to pick our first daughter's name, Annika, because we both just heard it and loved it and it fit all our 'requirements' about working in both cultures. Full Article

What a year Laura Dern has had. She began the year in Big Little Lies. She’s ending the year in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In between those two posts there’s Twin Peaks and Good Time Girls and Downsizing and she shot the JT Leroy movie this summer. Oh, right, and she won an Emmy. And she’s been nominated for a Golden Globe and a SAG. Full Article

Carpets & Candids: Hana’s classic dress

Certain “classic” dress shapes I could do without. For example, the wrap dress. I’m also not big on the sweetheart neckline that fits to the waist and then puffs out to the skirt.  Hana Mae Lee is wearing a “classic” dress. I don’t know what the word for it is but it’s been around forever – longish flutter sleeves, material loosely dropped across the chest, fitted through the torso, and bias to the bottom. Full Article
