The Immigrant Marion
James Gray, a Cannes favourite, screened his highly anticipated The Immigrant today at the festival. The reviews I’ve read have been medium to good. Once again, Gray is working with his muse, Joaquin Phoenix. They say however that he may have found a new one in Marion Cotillard. Her performance is generating some serious buzz. And, once again, she could be part of the conversation during award season. Let me say -- again -- that I think she should have had Quvenzhane Wallis’s spot this year at the Oscars. If you’ve seen Rust & Bone, you know what I mean.
Not surprisingly, Joaquin Phoenix was not at the press conference today. This is not his environment. His environment, as you know, is in character. And word is he delivers, as always, in The Immigrant. Both he and Marion, and yes, it’s early, but this is what we do here, are now being talked about as possible contenders. Which leaves Jeremy Renner...
Some reviewers have noted that Marion and Joaquin are so spectacular in their roles, Renner -- who is solid -- almost seems like an afterthought. There’s a joke in here about Hawkeye but it’s Friday, and I don’t have enough mind to find it.
Renner was at amfAR last night and at the photo call today with Marion, whose eyes kept watering, and James Gray. He looks really good in black and white.
