My ma lives with an incurable disease called POEMS. For the last few years, she’s been in and out of hospital. At one point she was hospitalised for 9 months straight. Poor health is hard on the patient. But it also affects their loved ones, their caregivers. In our family’s case, dad, Jacek, and I have been caregiving for almost a decade. We could not do it without the support of the professionals who’ve helped us as we’ve adjusted our lives and our homes around ma’s situation.

On May 7, hospice organizations across the country are taking part in Hike for Hospice, a national day of raising money and awareness for hospices that provide compassionate care for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Hike for Hospice kicks off National Hospice Palliative Care Week, and puts the spotlight on how important it is for Canadians to have access to the best quality hospice palliative care possible.
