Whatever we may think of it, Fifty Shades of Grey is an unqualified hit, with $300 million at the worldwide box office and counting. In some respects, that’s a good thing: A movie by women, about women, for women is a monster success. Every time we clock a win like this, it gets that much harder to deny that movies by and about women can’t be profitable, or are somehow “risky”. Full Story

After screening at Sundance, HBO has released the first trailer for Going Clear, the documentary about Scientology. There are no faces. Just voices. And reviews from major media outlets. And images of… machinery. Machines for minds. Machines for brainwashing? And words like the ones in the title. Full Story

The film adaptation of Philip Roth’s novel American Pastoral has undergone some upheaval during its development. First Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly were going to star as the central couple, then Bettany dropped out and was replaced by Ewan McGregor—but Connelly stuck around (does that make for weird dinner conversation at home?). Full Story

Lainey emailed me last night and said I needed to go look at Norm Macdonald’s Twitter. So I did and it turns out that Macdonald, who appeared on SNL40 over the weekend, was having an SNL-themed story time about the week running up to the anniversary special. The big revelation that everyone is latching onto is that Eddie Murphy was supposed to appear in the “Celebrity Jeopardy” sketch as Bill Cosby, but that he backed out at the eleventh hour because he didn’t want to “kick a man when he was down”. Full Story

Another Beygency crisis?

The internet was even more obsessed with Beyonce yesterday when several unretouched images of her were leaked online. By civilian standards, they’re fine. Pictures of a lovely looking person. But Beyonce is not a civilian. And being called a “lovely looking person” is not the message, not on brand. Full Story

Those Rihanna and Leonardo DiCaprio hookup rumours have been happening for weeks now, ever since New Year’s. And on Valentine’s Day they were at the same club together in New York. Supposedly some people say they were getting close inside. Then they left at around 4:30am separately but since it was around the same time, people are speculating that they went home to f-ck. Full Story

Last night in New York. At The Spotted Pig. Taylor Swift and Kanye West were both there, papped leaving within minutes of each other after meeting for dinner supposedly to discuss their upcoming collaboration. This shouldn’t be a surprise as he told Ryan Seacrest last week: “Yeah, she wants to get in the studio and we’re definitely going to go in. Full Story

A promo for Justin Bieber's upcoming roast on Comedy Central has just been released. Like I said before, I don't know why people were initially so happy about this like they actually thought he'd be embarrassed. About what? He gets to take his shirt off. There's an entire show about him. Full Story

Scarlett Johansson hasn’t been at the Oscars since 2011. This year, the Academy has invited her to present. It’s a good selection. Because, as previously mentioned, with the exception of Reese Witherspoon and Bradley Cooper, this year’s nominees aren’t marquee names for the MiniVan Majority. Full Story

Michael Keaton’s last minute push

Joanna Posted by Joanna at February 13, 2015 16:44:02 February 13, 2015 16:44:02

This Best Actor race is the tightest category face-off in years. Like Lainey wrote yesterday, it might be too close to call. But since Oscar voting ends on Tuesday, the top three contenders — Eddie Redmayne, Michael Keaton and Bradley Cooper — are now in the final phase of campaigning, which means it's time to kiss babies. Full Story
