Leonardo DiCaprio spent the weekend in New York. On Sunday he was papped walking down the street with current bonafide, Kelly Rohrbach. He made no attempt to cover his face. He didn’t run around looking for a trash bin to jump into to avoid being photographed. Instead, he just kept walking with his turned out feet and his hippy gait (he’s a hip-swinger), and holding her hand, smiling. Full Story

London Fields

Sarah Posted by Sarah at September 28, 2015 19:36:45 September 28, 2015 19:36:45

London Fields is one of the worst movies I’ve seen this year, and I’ll get to sh*tting on it in a second, but first, an odd thing happened TIFF with this movie. I saw it at a press screening at the festival—Joanna and I were both completely floored by its unmitigated rancidness—but before it premiered for the public, it was pulled from the TIFF lineup because the director, Matthew Cullen, sued the producers Full Story

Stonewall

A lot of bricks are being thrown at Stonewall, and with good reason. The film has been savagely attacked by critics for whitewashing the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a pivotal turning point for the LGBTQ rights movement in the U.S. Beyond that, it’s been hit by several boycotts and grossed a paltry $839 per theatre in its opening weekend Full Story

Don’t think too hard about Anne Hathaway in The Intern

Nancy Meyers’s latest Upper East Side White People With Problems movie, The Intern, follows the likes of It’s Complicated and Something’s Gotta Give, except The Intern has been liberally doused with hipster flavor in an attempt to appeal to The Youths. Manhattan has been traded for Brooklyn—sorry, Brooklyn, as the location of a Nancy Meyers movie you are no longer hip—and the “people of a certain age” rom-com plot has been replaced with a platonic, inter-generational friendship between a thirty-something Millennial and a septuagenarian Baby Boomer. Full Story

Leonardo DiCaprio spoke at the 2015 Global Citizen Festival on Saturday in New York. These are probably the best pictures we’ve seen of him in, well, in years. This is the version of Leo we’ll be seeing for the next several months as he campaigns toward his first Oscar for his performance in Alejandro G Inarritu’s The Revenant. Full Story

Neither Benedict Cumberbatch nor Jake G are playing Nikola Tesla

That’s my takeaway from the news that Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal are in talks to star in a movie called The Current War, based on the nineteenth century patents arms race between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse for control of the budding electric industry. At the heart of the Current War was Edison’s direct current system going up against NIKOLA TESLA’s alternating current system—Tesla designed the electric grid as we know it today—which was a much more efficient, and cheaper, way of transmitting large quantities of electricity. Full Story

Idris Elba flew to Vancouver after promoting Beasts Of No Nation to work on the new Star Trek. He left yesterday, just in time to give me new photos for my birthday. What a sexy gift. Thank you. Have a great weekend!  Full Story

Jake G in Everest

Actually, I should say that it’s Jason Clarke in Everest because Jake Gyllenhaal has a relatively small role and disappears from the film for long stretches, but he’s being treated in the publicity materials like he’s the star, and I don’t know how many of you are really here for Jason Clarke, while I know there are a bunch of us scanning for Jake G. Full Story

The Martian & James McAvoy

The cast of The Martian, led by Matt Damon, was in London tonight for the UK premiere. So far the reviews for The Martian have been quite strong. Sarah saw it at TIFF and liked it a lot and Sarah’s hard to please. But when I saw her after the screening, she wasn’t angry at all about spending two hours in the theatre watching it. Full Story

Tom Hardy ain’t got time for primadonna directors

Sarah Posted by Sarah at September 24, 2015 18:59:26 September 24, 2015 18:59:26

Tom Hardy gave an interview, via Skype, to Vulture and in it he sh*ts all over the idea of directors and basically says they contribute nothing to film. I laughed for a solid five minutes, because cinema is a culture that worships directors and also because Tom Hardy basically just declared to all future employers that he doesn’t really respect what they do. Full Story

Once again, I went into the second entry in a YA dystopia franchise totally blind—I have not read the Maze Runner books nor have I seen the first Maze Runner movie. Like Divergent: Insurgent, this is an exercise in “Can Sarah figure out what is going on without any context?” Because all YA dystopias are the exact same mashup of Lord of the Flies, The Lottery, and Battle Royale, the answer is yes—yes I can. Full Story
