A new trailer for The Martian has just been released. Normally I’m not big on space movies, like Gravity. Because all that open …space-ness? Scares the sh-t out of me. But then again, I can’t “science the sh-t” out of anything so being helpless and useless is basically my default position. Full Story

James McAvoy and DanRad are my new favorite onscreen couple

James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe have a new movie together, Victor Frankenstein, that comes out this November, for which the first trailer has just arrived. I was expecting something dark and dour, but Victor Frankenstein is written by Max Landis, who generally writes genre movies with strong humor impulses (like Chronicle and the upcoming American Ultra), and is directed by Paul McGuigan, who’s done a lot of the direction for the slick BBC Sherlock. Full Story

Following its way-higher-than-expected $60.2-million opening bow, Straight Outta Compton will hit even more theatre screens this coming weekend. But the film’s pop culture ripple effect isn’t limited to box office success or think pieces — it may also help Jennifer Hudson land one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood. Full Story

Jennifer Lawrence looks up for Joy

The official poster for David O Russell’s upcoming Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence, was released today. Look up for Joy? Is that the idea here? Wasn’t my train of thought. My train of thought was that I wanted to write about Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone today and then this poster arrived in my inbox which reminded me of the time Emma looked up too – when she lipsynched All I Do Is Win on Jimmy Fallon:  And that gave me the perfect segue to talk about Emma and Jennifer being friends and how Twitter (via Susan, thanks Susan!) told me they went out for dinner – no one knows when this happened but the photo just surfaced a few days ago. Full Story

Shaun the Sheep: The Mad Max of kids’ movies

Inevitably when I review a movie meant for children and come down on it the least little bit, some huffy parent emails to tell me off for sh*tting on harmless whizz-bangs meant to distract the children for ninety minutes or so. I say the same thing every time—it’s hard to give a movie like Minions Full Story

Guy Ritchie’s take on retro-pop espionage flicks, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. did not have a very good opening weekend, landing in third place behind the surprisingly (TRIUMPHANTLY) strong Straight Outta Compton and Tom Cruise’s take on retro-pop espionage flicks, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Full Story

As you know now, Straight Outta Compton took the box office this weekend, handily. A $57 million opening…in August. It’s an achievement. And now it’s generating some very loud Oscar buzz. First you need the money. They brought in the money. Then you court the Academy. Well, there was a screening this weekend, and apparently the Academy – at least the members who were there – was impressed. Full Story

Johnny Depp showed up at Disney’s D23 this weekend to promote Pirates 5. On Friday he wore regular clothes, and by regular clothes, I mean a shirt and a vest and some necklaces – but not too many – and a jacket on top and, to me, he’s starting to look like Walt Disney. I can’t look too long at his face. Full Story

SOME SPOILERS Disney’s in-house fan convention, D23, was this past weekend, and after skipping out on Comic-Con, Marvel showed up with both barrels loaded. After a video message from Benedict Cumberbatch and a teaser for Dr. Strange unveiling some psychedelic concept art, Marvel chief Kevin Feige moved right along to his other 2016 release, Captain America: Civil War (worry not, Cumbercookies, Dr. Full Story

So you know how I was just recently saying that actor-directors are usually bad? Well, funny thing, Joel Edgerton just released his directorial debut, The Gift, and it’s really good. So while yes, fewer actors should become directors, Joel Edgerton gets a pass because he is actually good at it. Full Story

Jason Segel is gunning for Oscar in The End of the Tour

And he is the best part of The End of the Tour, a movie that would have been better served as a play. Based on David Lipskey’s aborted Rolling Stone interview of David Foster Wallace just after Infinite Jest was published—which Lipskey later turned into the book Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself—Tour is pure literary wank that does not make for a compelling film, despite a pair of very good performances. Full Story
