Jake Gyllenhaal wasn’t at the Palais last night. The jury wasn’t required. Here he is today around town. And pictures of him from opening night on Wednesday looking very smooth in that tux. While Jake had no official engagements to attend on Thursday, he was part of the Weinstein annual Cannes presentation – not necessarily in person but in performance. Full Story
If I was in Cannes, one of the films I’d be queuing for this weekend is the Amy Winehouse documentary directed by Asif Kapadia. Have you seen Senna? One of the best sports documentaries of all time. Obviously more enjoyable if you were a fan of Ayrton Senna but still riveting if you’re not. And I feel like it will be the same with Amy.
I was at a barbecue last weekend when Back To Black came on rotation.
And I’m a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside
Duana and I looked at each other and, almost at the same time, sighed, “Oh Amy”.
It was announced yesterday that Amy will be released in theatres July 10. The trailer is below.

Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor worked together on a Woody Allen film called Cassandra’s Dream a few years ago. Here they are arriving in Nice for the Cannes Film Festival today and they happen to be travelling in the same outfit, just coincidence no conspiracy. Ewan knows Cannes. He was a jury member in 2012. I remember hearing a story last year of a woman who flew to Australia with an orange and it turned into a major drama when she got there. They’re serious over there about contamination and bio-transfers. So if you have pets, and you’re travelling there with them, they have to go into quarantine. Full Story

Sean Penn joined Charlize Theron at the Palais in Cannes for Mad Max: Fury Road today. Is this supposed to be our substitute for Brange Cannes? Because I reject that. I was however reminded of previous Cannes. There was a year he was there and I was covering it and on the party scene, he was always the last one to go home. Full Story

Ahead of its premiere in Cannes, a teaser for Macbeth has been released featuring Michael Fassbender and ending with Marion Cotillard and the line: What’s done cannot be undone. To bed, to bed, to bed She only says “to bed” once here in the preview but you’ll recall from English class that it’s almost like a mantra for her at that point. Full Story
The first trailer for The Intern, starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, written and directed by Nancy Meyers, was released yesterday. And my first impression is that… This movie is manipulative! Anyone who has an aging dad will be manipulated. Because how do you not watch this and not think of your dad? I think of my dad, I worry about my dad. Full Story
The cocaine fueled Everything Is A Good Idea 1990s era of filmmaking produced some of the most insane garbage in the history of cinema. Every decade has its share of bad movies, except the 1990s. In the 90s, “bad” as a category was replaced with “Jesus Christ, how much blow did you DO?” Everything that came out in that decade is so goddamn weird that there is a movie for every niche, like The Craft, which fills the Teenage Occult Power Fantasy square on the 1990’s What The F*CK Is This Even? bingo card. The first trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s much anticipated Crimson Peak introduced us to the creepy setting and not much else, but now the international trailer has arrived and it lays out a little more of the story. Mia Wasikowska plays a Victorian lady author who is interested in ghosts and the occult, and Tom Hiddleston seems to be her editor? Publisher? Still not clear. Full Story
