Emma Bovary is never anything less than frustrating, so it’s fitting that the latest screen adaptation of Flaubert’s novel, Madame Bovary, should also be frustrating. Directed by Sophie Barthes and co-written by Barthes and Felipe Marino, Madame Bovary is a gorgeous film that is sometimes inspired and sometimes mundane, but is consistently frustrating. Full Story

Spoilers, but also like, the title Like Whiplash before it, one film won both the Audience Award and the US Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Whiplash went on to bag five Oscar nominations, winning three of them. I don’t know if Dying Girl will have the legs to carry it all the way to Oscar—it’s not as ferocious a movie as Whiplash, and it lacks a fiery, attention-getting performance—but it is certainly a very good movie, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see it pull an Adapted Screenplay nomination, if nothing else, telling the story of awkward high school student Greg’s senior year, in which he befriends a terminally ill classmate, struggles with his future, and falls out with his best friend. Full Story

Coming out of Cannes, Denis Villeneuve’s latest film, Sicario, received very positive reviews, with many singling out Emily Blunt’s performance as a possible awards contender. Since breaking out with the Oscar-nominated Incendies in 2010, Villeneuve has established himself as a consistently compelling director of thrillers, and many think Sicario could be his first major mainstream hit (Prisoners was a modest success in 2013). Full Story

Allison Janney and Ellen Page are back together, seen here yesterday on the set of Tallulah in New York. Coincidentally, it’s another movie about a baby. The baby’s mother is evidently a f-ck up. So Ellen rescues her and pretends she’s the mother instead, helped by her boyfriend’s mother, presumably played by Allison. Full Story

Fan Bingbing at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Did you hear about the social media fight she got into with Wang Sicong this week? Wang Sicong is the 27 year old son of the richest man in China. He recently posted a photo of his dog wearing two Apple watches, one around each leg. Each watch is valued at $10,000. Full Story

Behold, a Lady Ghostbuster

Kristen Wiig was photographed on the set of the new Ghostbusters movie, looking rather dowdy in her costume. I’m into this—one of the best parts of OG Ghostbusters is that the guys aren’t hero-types. They’re awkward nerds who get excited about science, and Wiig’s costume is giving me hope that’s the holdover spirit uniting the two movies. Full Story

Jake Gyllenhaal was in London this week accompanied by a woman he met recently that British gossips have identified as Anna Liban. They went out for lunch. It looked like a flirty lunch. He had his hand in her hair. And they dressed the same. So I guess we have to stop talking about him and Rachel McAdams. Full Story

Bill Pohlad, a producer who has overseen such films as Brokeback Mountain, Into the Wild, Tree of Life, and 12 Years a Slave, as well as the musically inclined biopic The Runaways, makes his directorial debut (technically a sophomore effort as his original debut was canned in the early 1990s) with a biopic of The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson that, while not a perfect film, is an interesting and sometimes illuminating portrait of an artist as a young and older man. Full Story

Zac Efron’s been shooting Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates in Hawaii. On Tuesday he was on set in a wrestling suit, cupping himself. This is more for you than it is for me because Zac is not my flavour, although he’s been trying so hard to make himself everyone’s flavour with his ripped body, on display on the beach, in some areas sunburned. Full Story

Relief—a movie trailer that doesn’t make me want to crawl under my bed and hide! After a series of trailers that I had to watch with one hand over my eyes because the events depicted are pants-sh*tting scary, the trailer for the upcoming thriller Captive is a relative walk in the park. Full Story
