Bill Pohlad, a producer who has overseen such films as Brokeback Mountain, Into the Wild, Tree of Life, and 12 Years a Slave, as well as the musically inclined biopic The Runaways, makes his directorial debut (technically a sophomore effort as his original debut was canned in the early 1990s) with a biopic of The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson that, while not a perfect film, is an interesting and sometimes illuminating portrait of an artist as a young and older man. Full Story

Zac Efron’s been shooting Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates in Hawaii. On Tuesday he was on set in a wrestling suit, cupping himself. This is more for you than it is for me because Zac is not my flavour, although he’s been trying so hard to make himself everyone’s flavour with his ripped body, on display on the beach, in some areas sunburned. Full Story

Relief—a movie trailer that doesn’t make me want to crawl under my bed and hide! After a series of trailers that I had to watch with one hand over my eyes because the events depicted are pants-sh*tting scary, the trailer for the upcoming thriller Captive is a relative walk in the park. Full Story

Emma Stone is featured in the new issue of WSJ Magazine to promote Irrational Man. It’s Manic Pixie Dream Girl…the interview. At one point she pops a sugar cube in her mouth, just because it’s a cute thing that she does. And she tells a story about how she f-cked up a beauty roundtable once by talking about decomposing bodies. Full Story

The first thing I want you to do is not reflexively roll your eyes at the idea of “Lifetime movie”. Did you learn nothing from Taraji P. Henson last week, who was so proud of the breakthrough she accomplished and the Emmy nomination that resulted on her last Lifetime movie? Click here Full Story

With American Sniper and Aloha, Bradley Cooper is on an Army movie run, which he will now cap off by making a movie about a fake Army. He’s going to play a guy pretending to be in the Army, pretending to be in the Army—kind of. Based on the true story of a prototype psy-ops warfare unit in World War II, BCoop is producing a film about the “Ghost Army”, a squadron of recruits from various creative jobs like advertising and fashion design (Bill Blass was among them) who went around Europe with records of sound effects and inflatable tanks and tricked the Nazis into thinking the US had forces where there were none. Full Story

Check out Kerry Washington as Anita Hill in the upcoming HBO biopic Confirmation about Clarence Thomas’s Supreme Court senate hearings. This was almost 25 years ago. I was 17, in my last year of high school. It was all over the TV. Pitch Perfect 2 made a lot of money. It’s an established movie franchise now. So it’s no surprise that they’re moving ahead with the third installment. Kay Cannon is back as the writer. Alexander Skarsgard was in LA this weekend promoting The Diary Of A Teenage Girl. The film received  excellent reviews after Sundance and the LA Times just called it “exhilarating” ...even though, um, it’s about statutory rape. Full Story
