Jurassic World opens this weekend. There is no doubt it’ll win the box office, which would be Chris Pratt’s third #1 after The Lego Movie and Guardians Of The Galaxy. The only question is: how big? Some are saying that domestically Jurassic World will gross up to $125 million. That’s on top of an estimated $250-300 million internationally. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Today is Johnny Depp’s 52nd birthday. Do you think he thinks about the number? Conveniently a new poster for his upcoming film, in which he plays Whitey Bulger, has been released. Meanwhile he continues to work on Pirates 5 in Australia, monitored by drones. TMZ has the video. Not sure who sent the drone over but I also happened to read an article this morning about how “dronies” are replacing selfies.

Let’s say you’re out for a bike ride. Or a date. And you have a drone. The drone will follow you, shooting the entire time. It’s the new extension of vanity. Because now you can be the star in your own film. This is your own movie montage. Drones might be especially advantageous for Twi-Hards. Remember those Ian Somerhalder fans who were scolded by him for waiting outside his hotel on what he called “my day”? (Click here for a refresher.) Now they can just drone him down the street from the comfort of the coffee shop a block away. Click here to see Johnny Depp getting droned.

Melissa McCarthy in Spy

I was nervous about this one going in because though I think Melissa McCarthy is very talented, she has also made a lot of bad movies since breaking out in Bridesmaids. But Spy reunites her with her Bridesmaids and The Heat director, Paul Feig—who also wrote the script—and the results are spectacular. Full Story

Rachel presents to Jake

Spike TV’s Guy’s Choice Awards happened this weekend. The show will air on June 18th. Jake was honoured with the Guy Con award, presented to him by his Southpaw co-star, friend, and rumoured girlfriend, Rachel McAdams. Let’s play reverse psychology here: If there was really something between them, would they have agreed to have her do this? Or is all of that good promotion for the movie anyway? Would these two toy with those kinds of suggestions just to promote a movie? Jake would want you to think he’s above that. Full Story

The Martian: Also NOPE

Sarah Posted by Sarah at June 8, 2015 16:49:02 June 8, 2015 16:49:02

I called Everest a big bag of NOPE after watching the first trailer, and after sitting through Fox’s three minute-plus first trailer for The Martian, I am adding this movie to the NOPE bag, too. Directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian is based on Andy Weir’s novel (adapted by Drew Goddard) about an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars after a manned mission is forced to abort. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Melissa McCarthy’s Spy opens this weekend. So far, the reviews are excellent. At post time, Spy is rated 94% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and is expected to take the box office. That’s amazing and it’s important. Because finally Melissa McCarthy is in a feature that’s deserving of her and also, it’s not often that a female comedian gets to lead. And win. Especially when the pressure to win is so much more. Sandler doesn’t have to worry that his sh-tty movies will cost him. He gets to keep making them. But, as we know, as we’ve seen, when a woman carries a movie and it goes down, Hollywood decides it has to take a break.

I laugh every time I see the Spy trailer. And I’ve seen it several times. I love the way Melissa delivers the “Well that’s a confidence builder" line. Even the scooter part is hysterical…because, yes, why does a scooter need a roof? Also, I can’t wait to watch her scenes with Rose Byrne who’s been impressively showing us so much range the last couple of years.

If Melissa opens at #1 this weekend and Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck comes out strong in a few weeks, following the earlier success of Pitch Perfect 2, the message becomes harder and harder to dismiss. Hopefully. One of the gifts of discrimination is its steadfast myopia. This would also describe the Entourage movie.

Have a great weekend!

Since I just pissed you off with those Gerard Butler pictures in the previous post, let me make it up to you. These are photos that, guaranteed, no one will object to. Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Tina Fey all together last night at the Steve Martin AFI Lifetime Award tribute gala. Well, obviously, that was the best table, non? Still 6 months to go before we see all of them in their movie, Sisters, opening in December. Full Story

Mission: Impossible 5 looks like a blast

After the back-to-back highs of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Mad Max: Fury Road, I’m kind of in a blockbuster hangover zone where I’ve lost interest in seeing more blockbusters. Like despite Chris Pratt’s charm offensive, Jurassic World is off my radar entirely. But a new trailer for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (here is a franchise that really needs to use numbers and not subtitles) promises that there is still some action-movie fun left to be had this summer. Full Story
