If you’ve been reading this site a while, you know my affection for Winona Ryder. I love her a LOT. And if you scroll down a few bars and look at my Five List, you know my affection for Oscar Isaac. I lust him a LOT. They were together yesterday to promote HBO’s Show Me A Hero, debuting this Sunday, the first two of six parts, airing over the next 3 weeks now that True Detective You Suck Season 2 is over. Full Story

Katie Holmes in New York today on the set of her movie All We Had based on the novel of the same name by Annie Weatherwax (great name). Katie is also directing the film. You know what Sarah keeps saying about actors becoming directors? Yeah. Katie certainly isn’t getting the kind of acting work that she’s interested in. Full Story

Bradley Cooper’s been in London all summer in The Elephant Man. His next movie opens in October. He plays a chef, presumably called Adam Jones, who burns out on drugs, and has to cook his way back to the top. The original title of the film was supposed to be Chef, but Jon Favreau got there first. Full Story

You know the kind of movie your parents suggest watching when you’re visiting, and you agree to watch it because you know it’s relatively harmless entertainment that won’t include a graphic sex scene or anything similarly mortifying to watch with your parents? But then you end up pretending like you don’t actually like it because you’re not supposed to get sucked into the kind of populist maudlin tripe that’s made to appeal to white middle-aged suburban parents, except you do like it because goddamn it, it’s just so earnest and heartfelt that it works, even if it is crazy cheesy? And when it’s over and your parents ask if you like it, you downplay your reaction and go, “It was okay, I guess. Full Story

The problem with setting a murder mystery in the context of the Satanic Panic of the 1980s is that Satanism has been thoroughly debunked as a criminal phenomenon. Back then it was all the rage to accuse weirdo kids who liked heavy metal of all manner of crimes, but now we know that there really weren’t human-sacrificing death cults or whatever else the squares were afraid kids were up to back then. Full Story

Chris Evans is in Berlin shooting Captain America Civil War. I have a lot of anxiety about this movie, which I unload on Sarah, often. It’s because I love the Avengers so much, particularly the first one, and now they’re fighting and it sounds like this time it’s going to be a lot worse than the sh-t that Loki stirred up in his glass room. Full Story

More like Un-Fantastic Four

Sarah Posted by Sarah at August 10, 2015 14:02:36 August 10, 2015 14:02:36

Well, Fantastic Four really sh*t the bed this weekend. All the problems plaguing the movie behind the scenes and dogging its disastrous release will be dealt with in a separate post, so that here we can simply focus on the final product, which is just the worst. It’s wrong-headed from the get, a giant f*ck you to both the idea of narrative consistency and the audience for having the temerity to expect a superhero movie—a genre about people with fantastical powers flying around and saving the world—to be any fun at all. Full Story

After helping to get End of Watch and Nightcrawler made, Jake Gyllenhaal is making it official and opening his own production company. The name of his company is not yet known, but he’s just signed a first-look deal with Bold Films, the production company behind Nightcrawler. He’s also nabbed Riva Marker, who has produced dozens of films including The Kids Are All Right, Beasts of No Nation, and The Family Fang, to run his company. Full Story
