I remember hearing a story last year of a woman who flew to Australia with an orange and it turned into a major drama when she got there. They’re serious over there about contamination and bio-transfers. So if you have pets, and you’re travelling there with them, they have to go into quarantine. Full Story

Charlize & Sean in Cannes

Sean Penn joined Charlize Theron at the Palais in Cannes for Mad Max: Fury Road today. Is this supposed to be our substitute for Brange Cannes? Because I reject that. I was however reminded of previous Cannes. There was a year he was there and I was covering it and on the party scene, he was always the last one to go home. Full Story

Ahead of its premiere in Cannes, a teaser for Macbeth has been released featuring Michael Fassbender and ending with Marion Cotillard and the line: What’s done cannot be undone. To bed, to bed, to bed She only says “to bed” once here in the preview but you’ll recall from English class that it’s almost like a mantra for her at that point. Full Story

Annie & Bob: The Intern trailer

The first trailer for The Intern, starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, written and directed by Nancy Meyers, was released yesterday. And my first impression is that… This movie is manipulative! Anyone who has an aging dad will be manipulated. Because how do you not watch this and not think of your dad? I think of my dad, I worry about my dad. Full Story

Nostalgia factory to grind up The Craft

Sarah Posted by Sarah at May 14, 2015 15:53:38 May 14, 2015 15:53:38

The cocaine fueled Everything Is A Good Idea 1990s era of filmmaking produced some of the most insane garbage in the history of cinema. Every decade has its share of bad movies, except the 1990s. In the 90s, “bad” as a category was replaced with “Jesus Christ, how much blow did you DO?”  Everything that came out in that decade is so goddamn weird that there is a movie for every niche, like The Craft, which fills the Teenage Occult Power Fantasy square on the 1990’s What The F*CK Is This Even? bingo card. Full Story

The photo call and presser for Mad Max: Fury Road happened in Cannes this morning. Click here to read my review from yesterday. I have no doubt the audience at the Palais would have loved it. Like I wrote yesterday, the movie is straight up, balls out mental. Full Story

Crimson Peak: I want to go there

Sarah Posted by Sarah at May 13, 2015 20:18:43 May 13, 2015 20:18:43

The first trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s much anticipated Crimson Peak introduced us to the creepy setting and not much else, but now the international trailer has arrived and it lays out a little more of the story. Mia Wasikowska plays a Victorian lady author who is interested in ghosts and the occult, and Tom Hiddleston seems to be her editor? Publisher? Still not clear. Full Story

This Movie Is A Fraud

Duana Posted by Duana at May 13, 2015 19:10:57 May 13, 2015 19:10:57

I really wanted to be wrong about those Jem and the Holograms shots we looked at, just a few innocent days ago – click here for a refresher. I was…if anything, I was not right enough. What the hell is this sh*t that we’re watching? “Jerrica” doesn’t want to be a star?  NOoooope. Full Story

Film Review: The D Train

SPOILERS The D Train is not going to be for everybody. If you don’t like awkward humor, you won’t like this movie as it is so awkward at times it’s difficult to watch without full-body cringing. Jack Black gives a terrific weirdo performance, echoing his FANTASTIC turn as a buttoned-up weirdo in Richard Linklater’s delightful Bernie, but if you don’t like movies starring weirdos, you won’t like this movie. Full Story

Spoilers ahead… I screened Mad Max: Fury Road a couple of weeks ago in Toronto with just two other people. I can’t wait to see it again in a full theatre. Some movies you want to enjoy by yourself. Others are best experienced in a collective. Not that I didn’t have a great time, not that I wasn’t totally entertained, but Fury Road is a group experience. Full Story

Luc Besson returns to weird with Cara Delevingne

The Fifth Element is such a great movie. It’s a mess, don’t get me wrong, but it’s so fun in its messiness—I’ll always take a little mess in exchange for ambitious, original ideas. But it was also a huge financial disaster, and director Luc Besson didn’t make another live-action science fiction movie until last year’s Lucy. Full Story
