Some Oscar contenders have been up in our faces for weeks. Then there’s Rosamund Pike who promoted Gone Girl in September, let the performance do the work for her, and went off to enjoy the final weeks of her pregnancy away from the spotlight. Her baby was born December 2. We don’t know the name. Full Story

The first trailer for Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Cinderella halfway sold me on the project. It doesn’t look terrible, and some of the fantasy elements look cool, even if I will always and forever think that Cinderella’s should-be iconic ball gown is a mall prom dress nightmare (sorry, Lainey, the shoes don’t look much better). Full Story

Brad Pitt presented this weekend at the Palm Springs Film Festival to David Oyelowo. He’s a producer on Selma. And Selma is coming on well as a contender for Best Film and Best Director (Ava DuVernay). Have you seen it yet? It’s coming to more theatres this weekend. It’s worth it. Full Story

As I mentioned last week, voting for Oscar nominations ends on Thursday. So everyone’s doing a final push. On Saturday night, many contenders were in Palm Springs hanging out with all the old Academy members who live there. And the network for the old Academy members? They say it’s CBS. Full Story

Nightcrawler Anchored by Jake Gyllenhaal’s blazing performance as the creepy, amoral Lou Bloom, Nightcrawler plays like a fractured fairytale take on the American dream. Bloom is reprehensible, driven and ambitious and unwilling to be stopped by anything, including morality. Writer and first-time director Dan Gilroy gives us a series of profoundly uncomfortable scenes, and chooses to almost completely bypass gore in favor of evoking moral disgust. Full Story

How much promotion did Johnny Depp put in for Into The Woods? Almost none, right? Pretty sure he wasn’t at any of the premieres, screenings, Q&As. He’s big enough to cut that out of his job description when he wants to now. I’m not sure though that he’ll be able to get away with it for Mortdecai though. Full Story

With all the fuss surrounding The Interview, the question being asked after it was finally released via limited theatrical engagement and online platforms over the Christmas holiday is whether or not the movie is even worth all this trouble and strife. Full Story

About 11 months ago I wrote about the impending Entourage movie and at the time, this was my plot prediction: "Vince is happily married to the reporter he met at the end of the final season – they have 4 kids. Eric is now a big player in Hollywood, Johnny Drama is down on his luck after his TV show got cancelled and he lost all his money to a shady financial advisor; he now lives in Vince’s pool house. Full Story

Last week, following a threat from the hackers that have ruined Sony’s year, the studio decided to pull The Interview off their release slate entirely. They cancelled its release and had no plans to show it, ever, despite a huge amount of criticism that peaked with President Obama Full Story

The first trailer for Will Smith’s upcoming Focus was released yesterday. He’s a con man. Margot Robbie is his protégé. While watching the first 30 seconds, I was like, oh, this feels familiar. Then I realised, it felt familiar because he’s basically the guy he played in Hitch; Focus just gets darker because criminals find themselves in more dangerous situations than love coaches. Full Story
