Musicals are not my bag, so I had to brace myself to watch The Last 5 Years, an adaptation of Jason Robert Brown’s musical. I still ended up texting Lainey ten minutes in, electrically shouting that they wouldn’t stop singing because THEY WOULDN’T STOP SINGING. Musicals are inherently creepy—hey, you’ve just been stabbed, let’s stop to sing and dance about how you’re dying—but I can deal with the construct. Full Story

Ha. Look at Mae Whitman. In the best outfit she’s ever worn. For the premiere of The DUFF in NYC last night. The DUFF opens this weekend. Mae plays The DUFF– Designated Ugly Fat Friend. Robbie Amell is her childhood best friend, next door neighbour, nemesis, and, well, I think you know the formula. Full Story

Scarlett Johansson is testing for psychopaths

Scarlett Johansson’s career re-direct over the last several years is impressive. She’s become one of the very few actresses who can open an action movie, she’s retained her artistic indie cred, she’s doing the motherhood thing without turning it into a career move, and she has become rather exclusive in her public appearances, so that when she does show up somewhere, it feels like kind of a big deal. Full Story

I don’t think I’ve talked about Fifty Shades Of Grey at all this week. Have I? Pretty sure no. Pretty sure I haven’t asked you about Dakota Johnson yet. As I told you last week in my review of the movie, she totally makes the movie. You are so into her in the movie. Weren’t you? So far, I haven’t heard from anyone telling me I’m out of my ass on that point. Full Story

The film adaptation of Philip Roth’s novel American Pastoral has undergone some upheaval during its development. First Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly were going to star as the central couple, then Bettany dropped out and was replaced by Ewan McGregor—but Connelly stuck around (does that make for weird dinner conversation at home?). Full Story

Carey Mulligan is Just.So.Good.

We studied Thomas Hardy for a few weeks in one of my elective Fem-Lit university classes one year. I was not great with attendance at the time. There was a casino that had just opened two hours away. My parents were out of the country. For several months, I made some very bad decisions. Can’t recall why I showed up for that session in particular – probably lost all my money – but I’ll never forget the discussion, even though I hadn’t done any of the reading. Full Story

When Julia cries

Julia Roberts and Chiwetel Ejiofor were papped while shooting an emotional scene from The Secret In Their Eyes yesterday in LA. At some point, her husband, Danny Moder, who is also working on the film, came over to give her some instruction, likely technical. Because she doesn’t need any tips on how to cry on camera. Full Story

There’s a scene in Kingsman: The Secret Service (why the subtitle? It’s dumb) in which Colin Firth, as dapper gentleman spy Harry and Samuel L. Jackson as megalomaniac Valentine, talk about their love of old spy movies, bemoaning that modern spy thrillers have “grown too serious”. Full Story

She and McDonald have been friends for a while. They worked together on The Heat and appear to be quite close. Full Story

Scarlett Johansson hasn’t been at the Oscars since 2011. This year, the Academy has invited her to present. It’s a good selection. Because, as previously mentioned, with the exception of Reese Witherspoon and Bradley Cooper, this year’s nominees aren’t marquee names for the MiniVan Majority. Full Story

Beware of Crimson Peak

Sarah Posted by Sarah at February 13, 2015 20:11:36 February 13, 2015 20:11:36

There’s a steadily growing swell of hype surrounding Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak, which released its first trailer today (spurred on by a bootleg copy making the rounds after it debuted in front of Fifty Shades of Grey last night—when will studios learn that they cannot stop this from happening and just release trailers BEFORE they’re slated to premiere in theaters?). Full Story
