Michael Fassbender is in Tokyo today promoting Assassin’s Creed. The movie didn’t make much of an impact in North America but made back all of its money and more internationally. So, as a producer, he needs to keep pushing it in foreign markets, especially if he wants to get the sequels made. Full Story

What little worked in Fifty Shades of Grey worked because director Sam Taylor-Johnson and screenwriter Kelly Marcel played on a psychological thriller angle, and Dakota Johnson was able to use her natural screen presence to inject some slyness into Anastasia Steele that made her more than just a weepy doormat for the demanding, dominant Christian Grey to push around. Full Story

First and most important: Nothing bad happens to the dog. In fact, the first fifteen minutes of John Wick: Chapter 2 play like something of an apology for the first fifteen minutes of John Wick, as Chapter 2 opens with a rousing car chase and a surprisingly funny recap of the first movie. Once again, John Wick is introduced as “Baba Yaga”, the nominally retired, boogeyman hitman whose name alone is enough to cause hardened criminals to sigh and grimly accept that they are about to die. Full Story

Have you seen Moonlight yet? Moonlight is challenging La La Land for Best Picture. It’s an underdog though, especially since La La Land just took the Directors Guild and the Producers Guild award before that. There is, however, some backlash about La La Land. I liked La La Land. During the Super Bowl the first teaser for the second season of Stranger Things premiered and people are super into it. It has Eggos, Ghostbusters—boys once again!—and Eleven, so of course the internet is excited. The opening with the vintage Eggo Waffles commercial and the way it cuts to Eleven is slick. Full Story

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 also threw up an “extended” spot online following their in-game ad during the Super Bowl, and of all the movies advertised during the game, this one went over the best. (I thought more people would be into Logan but consensus in the room was that it looks “depressing”. Full Story
