It’s July, which means it’s time once again for the annual Gathering of the Geeks down in San Diego, otherwise known as Comic-Con. It also means we’re going to be getting a deluge of trailers and production announcements as studios and networks hawk their wares. Thursday Comic-Con kicks off today with a preview night, and Thursday opens the convention with a relatively light schedule. Full Story

This is apparently what Jennifer Aniston's hair in Squirrels For The Nuts will look like. This is apparently what "therapist" hair looks like? She plays one in the film. Here's Jen heading to set today wearing her big engagement ring. These shots provide a really good illustration of what a difference good hair makes. Full Story

Check out Vera Farmiga arriving in Vancouver to begin production on the second season of Bates Motel. Her new film The Conjuring opens this weekend. It’s currently sitting at 90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. I was at The Conjuring junket for etalk a couple of weeks ago in San Francisco. Full Story

The first trailer for Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave is out and holy hell, you guys. A friend put it perfectly—this isn’t Oscar bait-y, this is Oscar win-y. Based on the true story of a man who was born free in the North and then kidnapped and sold into slavery, this is not Django Unchained and its wish fulfillment. Full Story

He looks great in this light coloured suit, non? Ryan Gosling was in New York last night for the premiere of Only God Forgives. He also participated in a Q&A session with director Nicolas Winding Refn and castmates Vithaya Pansringarm, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Yayaying Rhatha Phongam.  Below – have you seen this shot before of Gosling and Phongam in what looks like a still from the film? I’ve never. Full Story

Two decent men. Two wonderful actors. I thought it’d be a nice way to end another day of bad news. Here’s Hugh Jackman in London at the premiere The Wolverine. He’s awesome and generous and great at his job, all aspects of it, as usual. And here’s Bryan Cranston getting his star on the Walk of Fame, supported by his Breaking Bad costars Aaron Paul, who looks happier for Cranston than he would for himself, Anna Gunn, R. Full Story

That’s the name of the movie. It’s a good one, for serious. And I hope they don’t change it. They just changed the name of Tom Cruise’s All You Need Is Kill to Edge Of Tomorrow, which is dumb. Anyway, Squirrels To The Nuts is being directed by Peter Bogdanovich, his first film in 10 years. Full Story

Deadline posted an article earlier this week about the upcoming award season and the possibility that it might actually be more diverse this year than it has been, maybe, ever. Fruitvale opens this weekend after coming out strong from Sundance. Then there’s The Butler, and Twelve Years A Slave, and Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. Full Story

Spike Lee’s Oldboy

One of the most crazily violent, and just plain crazy, movies I’ve seen is Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy, a classic of South Korean action cinema from 2003. It’s a twisted story of torture and revenge, loosely based on The Count of Monte Cristo, with some of the most memorable action sequences you’ll see (the hammer!). Full Story

Tom Hanks wants that third Oscar

He must be thinking, “Daniel Day-Lewis has three. Why not me?” First in October, Tom Hanks has Paul Greengrass’s Captain Phillips, about the Maersk Alabama’s crew being taken hostage by Somali pirates, which is sure to be a tense and heroic turn for Hanks. And then in December he’s starring as Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Full Story
