New pictures of our Winona Ryder three weeks in a row -- not sure this has ever happened in the lifetime of this blog. Here's Winona last night in LA at the premiere of The Iceman. She's been looking lovely lately. Here...well... the hair isn't great, is it? The way it's teased like that, it actually gives her back that off-balance vibe she'd had for years and I mean after the bad time when it became sad and uncomfortable, and not before it, when it was still sexy/quirky/vulnerable. Full Story

Denzel Washington & Marky Mark

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg were at Summer of Sony the other day promoting 2 Guns. When I saw these photos, I wrote to Sarah from Cinesnark asking her if she thought Mark acted like Mark when he was around Denzel, all heavy-dicked and thick-armed, or if she thought he’d be deferential instead. Full Story

Don’t change, Channing

Channing Tatum was at Summer of Sony this weekend with Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal promoting White House Down. I like how they all coordinated outfits here. White House Down is not my kind of film. But I will tell you right now that I’ll be seeing it -- for two reasons: so that I can do my part and make it a bigger deal than Gerard Butler’s Olympus Has Fallen and because, well, that’s how much I like Channing Tatum. Full Story

Ryan Reynolds vs Will Smith

Every year a big budget movie takes a sh-t at the box office. The other day I predicted that Will Smith’s After Earth would hold that title in 2013. Sarah from Cinesnark didn’t disagree, but after the trailer for R.I.P.D. was released last week, she thinks it might be R. Full Story

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are the people who made Crazy, Stupid, Love. Their next project is called Focus, and it was originally intended for their CSL stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Gosling couldn’t work it into his schedule and Stone was only doing it to work with him again so they were subsequently replaced by Kristen Stewart and Ben Affleck. Full Story

There are worse things than The Lone Ranger. Like, say, Transformers 1-3, conclusive. Or World War Z. WWZ looks terrible because it’s so freaking generic, like someone threw Independence Day, Armageddon and The Walking Dead into a blender and WWZ is the vomitus mass that came out. Or the entire Fast & Furious franchise. Full Story

Are you ready for Superman?

Sarah Posted by Sarah at April 17, 2013 15:53:55 April 17, 2013 15:53:55

Because he’s going to be very, very big. After the first trailer for Man of Steel came out in December, I expressed doubts—about Zack Snyder as a director, about Superman as a compelling character, about the overall tone being too similar to The Dark Knight trilogy (Christopher Nolan produced and developed the story for Steel), about the sadness of Superman’s beard. Full Story

Jamie Foxx is a blue albino crocodile

Don’t ask me how “blue albino” works, that’s just what is in my head as I look at these set photos of Jamie Foxx as Electro, the villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which so far has no cutesy subtitle (The Even More Amazing Spider-Man? Spider-Man: Still Amazing?). Did you ever see Cave of Forgotten Dreams? For some reason, Foxx done up as Electro reminds me of the albino crocodiles at the end. Full Story

Rachel McAdams was in Boston a couple of weeks ago. At the time, Emma Stone was in town too, visiting her friend Jennifer Lawrence who was working on a movie with Bradley Cooper. I posted a Girlcrushes article about it here wondering and hoping that it was something to look forward to. Full Story

No thanks, Tarzan. We’re good

I’m kind of wondering what Alexander Skarsgard’s career management plan looks like. On the one hand, he’s jumping off a successful cable show into films and taking supporting roles in movies like The East and Melancholia and What Maisie Knew, but on the other hand he books into would-be blockbusters like Battleship and a live-action Tarzan adaptation. Full Story

Yesterday when I wrote about the Elysium trailer I said that making good sci-fi is hard. It’s just a big pit of vipers and the vipers are named things like Exposition and Logic and Narrative Mandate. Good sci-fi requires a huge amount of behind-the-scenes planning, the majority of which will never actually be used in the final product (be it movie or book), but the rules and laws of the world created need to make some kind of sense. Full Story
