Will and Jaden Smith by M. Night Shyamalan looks terrible

Sarah Posted by Sarah at December 11, 2012 15:56:34 December 11, 2012 15:56:34

Somehow, after a run of increasingly bad efforts capped off by the infuriating The Happening and the appallingly awful The Last Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan is still allowed to make movies. How he’s not been thrown in Director Jail remains a mystery, and not only does he remain at large, free to crap out whatever turd of a twist ending he’s come up with and call it a plot, he’s still convincing major stars to put their names on his pieces of sh-t. Full Story

Last year around this time, Tom Cruise was promoting Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol with Katie Holmes at his side and on his side. As you know, M:I4 did very, very good business, and it seemed like, finally, Tom was over the couch-jumping. And in the dead of the night, she escaped. Since then, nightly news shows and celebrity-friendly publications have run slam pieces on Scientology, alleging that Tom has a freakish habit of auditioning his girlfriends and future-wives, seemingly no longer afraid of retribution. Full Story

Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth, this time focusing on Frodo’s uncle Bilbo undertaking his own adventure as a young man, is good enough, but “good enough” feels like an indictment when the original LOTR trilogy ranged from “very good” to “extraordinary”. Full Story

Because the first teaser for Star Trek Into Darkness is all about The Batch. As I mentioned earlier this week, we don’t know a lot about the plot or new characters in Star Trek 2. This teaser does little to shed light on either of those things. Full Story

At least for a night. And God, it makes all the difference. Her face, you can actually SEE her face. And it’s a really, really pretty face. And they did a great job with the makeup, now that they have something to work with, now that her hair is styled without that goddamn fringe. It’s really too bad about her dress. Full Story

Ryan Gosling met up with a friend/business associate for lunch yesterday at Gjelina in Venice. That’s the restaurant where you’re not allowed to request modifications to their menu items, like dressing on the side. Click here for a refresher. Full Story

You’re probably going to have to learn. He’s had a very busy year with four films—Lincoln, Lawless, Jack & Diane and his stand-out turn as the villain in Chronicle—and next year he’s got Atom Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot, Kill Your Darlings, and Place Beyond the Pines. Full Story

We miss him...but... I’m not sure if he really misses us. Because he’s busy. He’s working a lot. And he’s working very, very well. Here’s Kyle Chandler at the premiere of Zero Dark Thirty in New York last night with Kathryn Bigelow and Jessica Chastain and Jason Clarke. Full Story

I cannot stop making fun of the Star Trek 2 title, Star Trek Into Darkness. It sounds like an Annie Lennox song. “When the world ends/And hope is lost/We will rise again/Star Trek Into Darkness/Yeah/Star Trek Into Darkness”. In my head, it’s set to an 80s synth beat, at least as good as the Skyfall theme. Full Story

Matthew McConaughey’s Oscar

Sarah Posted by Sarah at December 4, 2012 16:00:09 December 4, 2012 16:00:09

(Click here for Sarah’s Nostradamus on Matthew McConaughey. As I said then, she’s a big ball hitter.) Back in May in my Cannes preview, I noted that Matthew McConaughey was having a busy year, with five movies, including Cannes’ selections Mud and The Paperboy. Full Story

Rachel Weisz takes out Hushpuppy

Lainey Posted by Lainey at December 4, 2012 15:47:27 December 4, 2012 15:47:27

The New York Film Critics Circle dropped a big surprise on award season yesterday in naming Rachel Weisz Best Actress for her performance in The Deep Blue Sea. Very, very few of the “Oscarologists” had her on their lists for the five nominee spots with the exception of Michael Musto from The Village Voice which, in hindsight, now totally makes sense. Full Story
