I saw The Bourne Legacy, and I liked it. It’s not a perfect movie and it definitely has some issues (you can read my full review here) but it’s not bad, not by a long shot. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed by it, probably because I didn’t really have any expectations going in, beyond that it would be decent-to-good. Full Story

Gerard Butler’s Playing For Keeps was pushed back from its original release date more than once. Now they think the holiday season might be a good time for it to meet audiences. Gerard Butler + Jessica Biel as parents in a movie...in theatres... one week before The Hobbit and Les Miserables open. Full Story

For those of us who’ve been Joss Whedon fans since the Buffy days, those of us who’ve suffered through cancelled TV shows and canned film projects, Whedon’s monster success with The Avengers is sweet. It’s like saying—See, we told you this guy was good, we knew it all along. Full Story

James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain continue to work on The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby which, to me, based on pap photos only and no other knowledge so, yes, an ignorant assumption, feels a little like One Day. Anyway, as you can see, their characters have an argument and he gets hit by a taxi but. Full Story

When bad movies attack: Total Recall edition

Look, it’s not like I expected Total Recall to be good. The 1990 original isn’t really good, but at least it’s fun in that way that bad movies can be. So while I didn’t expect the remake of Total Recall to be good, per se, I was looking for it to be fun and enjoyable anyway. Full Story

She’s been embroiled in a cheating scandal but today some good news for Kristen Stewart: Vulture is reporting exclusively that Stewart has been confirmed to play Peyton in the film adaptation of Styron’s Lie Down In Darkness. She beat out Jennifer Lawrence for the job. Full Story

Marvel wants to take over your TV, too

Sarah Posted by Sarah at August 1, 2012 14:04:06 August 1, 2012 14:04:06

In the wake of the success of The Avengers, Marvel is, of course, looking for ways to keep expanding their brand. Over the last few years, they’ve pursued traditional cross-platform partners with comic book tie-ins and an animated series (The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes), but now they’re eyeing the big prize: primetime television. Full Story

I don’t know if you noticed—I certainly did—but back in April when The Avengers press tour was going on, Jeremy Renner had the distressing habit of showing up to every major event in an incredibly shiny suit. He had a definite Shiny Suit Problem. It was tragic and horrifying and I couldn’t stop pointing it out. Full Story

Ruby Sparks opened in limited release this weekend. I haven’t seen it yet but really, really want to. For a few reasons: I love Zoe Kazan and she wrote it. I love Paul Dano (remember how wonderful he was in Little Miss Sunshine?). I love that Zoe and Paul love each other in real life. Full Story

With the summer superheroes out of the way, the next of the “most anticipated movies of 2012” is queued up and ready to go—Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth, The Hobbit. The film, subtitled An Unexpected Journey, is due in theaters in December. Part two, There and Back Again, is set for next December. Full Story

Why trailers should not be so long

Cloud Atlas will premiere at TIFF. Have you read it? As I noted the other day - click here for a refresher - I was nervous about how it could be a film and at the same time, curious about how it would look as a film as imagined by the Wachowskis. Now an almost 6 minute trailer is online. Full Story
