I have to begin by confessing that I have not read The Perks of Being a Wallflower. And I can safely say that I regret letting it slip through the cracks. Because if a movie this good came from a book, I can only imagine how transformative that book must be.  As a movie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower will go down as one of the great coming of age classics. Full Story

I can’t wait to hear people’s reactions to this movie. Director Walter Salles was faced with a daunting task, one that many might argue was virtually impossible to successfully accomplish: turn Jack Kerouac’s barely fictionalized autobiography, On The Road, often referred to as one of the most important novels of the century, into a film that wouldn’t crumble under the weight of such tremendously high expectations. Full Story

It’s time once again for the Toronto International Film Festival, the official kick-off of award season. TIFF feels really huge this year. It’s one of the world’s premiere film festivals in general, but this year it seems like the line-up is extra special loaded, like they might have caught the “we have to wrangle all the potential Oscar movies” bug from the folks over at Cannes, like TIFF wants to make a move against Cannes and be THE film festival. Full Story

I love bad action movies. Road House is one of my all-time favorite films. I can quote Point Break, chapter and verse. I will happily sit through Bad Boys II. I have a high threshold of pain when it comes to bad action movies. I like fairy tales too—I recently read the complete Grimm and OH MY GOD, it’s some deeply f*cked up stuff. Full Story

Thor is a free agent

Literally, he is free of an agent. Deadline reports that Chris Hemsworth, after the success of The Avengers and coming off his biggest payday ever, Snow White and the Huntsman, has broken up with his agent of four years, IFA’s Ilene Feldman. They cite differences stemming from negotiations for Thor 2 and Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse, which probably means IFA and Feldman were unable to get Hemsworth as much money as he wants. Full Story

Costume designers don’t get enough credit sometimes for hitting exactly the right notes in the details. Full Story

Captain America 2 is casting its female lead, with the final choice said to be down to Anna Kendrick, Imogen Poots and Felicity Jones. That’s an intriguing list, not only for what it says about which character they might be playing, but what we can expect Cap 2 to look like. It’s shaping up to be a lot less “golly-gee” than The First Avenger was, with comedy veterans Anthony and Joe Full Story

The Master in Chicago

Sarah Posted by Sarah at August 17, 2012 14:40:53 August 17, 2012 14:40:53

The crowd stretched down the block and around the corner, hundreds of people pouring onto Southport on a night when the Cubs weren’t in town for the special Chicago screening of The Master last night. People were palpably excited, checking and re-checking tickets, everyone worried about an oversell. Full Story
