Ewan McGregor makes his directorial debut adapting Philip Roth’s novel American Pastoral, and while he doesn’t embarrass himself, he also doesn’t do himself any favors. Working from an adaptation by John Romano (The Lincoln Lawyer), Pastoral manages to feel too long and like not enough at the same time, and it’s a reminder that not every story, no matter how good, is inherently cinematic. Full Story

Leonardo DiCaprio was the big draw here at TIFF on Friday afternoon to screen his documentary Before The Flood. You can imagine the media presence at the theatre. It’s Leo. And, as TIFF’s documentary programmer Thom Powers told the audience, “The man at the centre of this film has a very large choir”. Full Story

One of the all-time great good-bad movies is Deep Blue Sea, the movie about the super-shark that eats a bunch of people, and figures out how to turn an oven on in order to kill someone inside it. Deep Blue Sea is just the right amount of terrible, action oriented, and batsh*t insane to make for perfect guilty pleasure viewing. Full Story

The last film Ben Affleck directed was Argo. It went on to win Best Picture. Live By Night is Ben’s next directorial feature, due out in January, although many believe that there will be a limited release in December to qualify for award season. Full Story

My first day at TIFF is a split result. On the one hand, I made it here without losing my phone this time, which is a MAJOR improvement over last year. On the other hand, the first film I saw, Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women is not awesome. It has incredible acting going for it and not a whole lot else. Full Story
