So Saoirse Ronan grabs an Oscar nomination, which is not really a surprise, given that the buzz about Brooklyn has been huge, and that she’s a great actress. Remember, it’s not even her first nomination – that was for Atonement, back in 2008. What was a surprise was getting an amazing email yesterday from Aisling (ASHling), telling me that some in Ireland are beginning to accuse Saoirse of ‘Irishing-up’ her accent and general persona as she did North American press. Full Story

Idris Elba was Netflix’s best chance at an Oscar nomination for Beasts Of No Nation. But the Academy isn’t ready yet for Netflix to come and f-ck up the order of the film industry. He was left off the list of Best Supporting Actors. When Straight Outta Compton was called for Best Original Screenplay, I thought, OMG, Compton will make Best Picture! Nope. Full Story

Well, my one prediction was wrong. Young Jacob Tremblay was not nominated for an Oscar. But he is in an Oscar nominated film, Room. There will be 8 films competing for Best Picture this year at the Oscars. So the nominations were just announced. We’ll be splitting up the analysis into a few different posts. Full Story

This is the first review of 2016, so welcome to the Annual January Movie Sh*tshow! We’re kicking off the month with a really bad horror film starring Natalie Dormer called The Forest. What is it about? If you guessed a forest, you’re right! More specifically, it’s about the Aokigahara Forest, the so called “suicide forest”, in Japan, a real place where a lot of people have gone to die over the years, including last year, as people still flock to Aokigahara to kill themselves. Full Story

Money Monster producer porn

Lainey Posted by Lainey at January 13, 2016 18:00:38 January 13, 2016 18:00:38

Duana and I established a friendship before we met in person. When I think about it, it’s quite a love story. She was producing me for my first etalk hits on Mondays. We’d talk every Sunday and we could have gotten it done in 15 minutes but those conversations ended up being, sometimes, three hours long. Full Story

There’s a really great double profile on Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan in the new issue of New York Magazine this week. The interview took place just before Christmas. Shanice’s I Love Your Smile is mentioned early on in the piece. So, obviously, I loved every word. What I love most though is how these two want to work, the projects they talk about, and how those projects will not only change the conversation about diversity in film but also begin a new conversation about black film. Full Story

Matthew McConaughey stars in Confederate Point Break

Sarah Posted by Sarah at January 12, 2016 19:32:10 January 12, 2016 19:32:10

When Lainey asked me to cover the trailer for Matthew McConaughey’s new movie, Free State of Jones, I was like, “What? Why?” But then I watched it and it made sense because the movie looks ridiculous and amazing. Like I’m not sure which joke to make first—Die Hard the Southern Way or The Patriot II: Confederate Vengeance. Full Story

So after the back and forth that involved Ava DuVernay coming and going and Ryan Coogler’s name being in contention and then being not in contention and then being back in contention, it is now official and Ryan Coogler, who is two-for-two as a director with Fruitvale Station and Creed, is directing Marvel’s Black Panther. Full Story

Tom Hiddleston dancing

Following a really cool teaser, there is now a full trailer for Tom Hiddleston’s movie High Rise, a future dystopia mind-f*ck from director Ben Wheatley. It’s more comprehensive look at the film, with the privileged world of the high rise and the weird sh*t happening inside, while still concealing what the hell is actually going on. Full Story

Leo is sensitive to the “persecuted” woman

Lainey Posted by Lainey at January 8, 2016 16:36:31 January 8, 2016 16:36:31

This morning Parade posted their new interview with Leonardo DiCaprio. The Revenant (Struggler) opens in wide release today. Leo talks a lot about his work as an environmental activist and humanitarian and how he feels a moral obligation to do more with his platform, because otherwise greed will win: Parade: You’re famous and rich, you can have all the women you want, do whatever you like, and instead you decide you’re going to concern yourself about the fires killing orangutans in Indonesia. Full Story

BAFTA award nominations were announced today as the Academy nominations deadline nears. (Ballots are due at the end of the day.) Just as she was for the Golden Globes, Alicia Vikander has been nominated twice. She’s in the Best Actress category, proper, for her work in The Danish Girl, and in the Best Supporting Actress category for her work in Ex Machina. Full Story
