Jake Gyllenhaal has been on a TREMENDOUS run these last few years, throwing down ace performance after ace performance, including a Hall of Fame-level Cinematic Weirdo in Nightcrawler’s Lou Bloom. In Jean-Marc Vallee’s Demolition he offers another take on the Cinematic Weirdo, this time starring as Davis, a repressed, buttoned-up financier whose life implodes after his wife dies. Full Story

Emily Blunt landed in Toronto last night, with her husband John Krasinski. She's in town for TIFF, and the North American premiere of her film Sicario - it's not a surprise at all that John is with her. They're not shy about hitting carpets together, having done so in TIFFs past, like at the world premiere of Looper with JGL back in 2012. Full Story

What happens when an actress-writer-director arrives on a red carpet with just 20 minutes to go before her North American premiere? She has her publicist walk the press line in advance to tell reporters what she’s wearing, to guarantee you’ll #askhermore. It was Lanvin. Natalie Portman arrived solo at the TIFF premiere of her film A Tale of Love and Darkness last night, a day after revealing she loves Broad City, is (almost?) embarrassed by Garden State – click here Full Story

TIFF Review: The Assassin

My first day at TIFF got off to a rocky start when I lost my phone at the airport, spent all afternoon trying to find a replacement phone in Canada and then sat through Hou Hsiao-hsien’s The Assassin, which has just been chosen as Taiwan’s entry Full Story

Charlie Hunnam on the cover of V Man, OH.MY.GOD. I guess we should try not to be totally low classy and talk about what he talked about so… Fifty Shades Of Grey. Those are the only excerpts that have been released so far it’s been two years and the f-cking movie has come out already – when are we going to stop with this? Apparently never. Full Story

Did you miss Natalie Portman? I did. I always do. Remember the teen who charmed David Letterman and went on to become one of his favourite guests? She’s still the same person, except now she loves Broad City Portman sez she loves BROAD CITY & was horrified that GARDEN STATE and Zac Braff got ragged on in the show. Full Story

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are enchanting in Carol

I know, I know, “enchanting” is a stupid word, but I don’t know how else to describe it. The US trailer for Carol, based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel about a mid-century lesbian romance, just came out and it IS enchanting. It’s so beautiful in its period detail and mustard-lit color scheme—giving it the look of an early Kodachrome photograph in which primary colors pop and everything else looks washed out and sallow—and with The Incomparable Cate doing a blown-out smoker’s voice in narration, it’s instantly evocative. Full Story

The last time I was in Canada I gave Lainey the gears because Canada’s money seemed fake and like something from Monopoly. I went to the bank yesterday to get some fake Canada money for my trip to TIFF and somehow, despite redesigning the paper bills, it’s still adorably pretend board game money. Full Story

Not Jason Statham in The Transporter Refueled

I went to see this movie on a Saturday during a holiday weekend so I was kind of surprised to find that I was the only person in the theater for The Transporter Refueled. That’s consistent with the movie’s unimpressive box office, but I figured there would be at least a couple other people in there, if only to escape the heat. Full Story

Leonardo DiCaprio and his current bonafide, Kelly Rohrbach, were papped at the Malibu fair on Sunday. He must not have known because otherwise, he’d be walking around with a trash bag over his head. Oscar the Grouch, but way less cute…now. According to the photographer who was there, Leo and Kelly were holding hands and kissing as they went on rides together. Full Story
