When I checked Twitter this morning, “Louis & Lauren” was a worldwide trending topic. One Direction and something is always a worldwide trending topic. At least one, sometimes two. Right now they’re trying to start a rumour that Zayn is rejoining the band. This is not happening. Full Story
In the heat of an obsession, there’s nothing more satisfying than when your google alert goes off in the morning. Brandon Flowers was on BBC Breakfast today. He played a show in Leeds last night, then got up at 5am to make it to the interview, and they asked him about that, about looking so fresh when he had to sleep on the bus…which, basically, was their segue into asking him about his lifestyle – being a rock star and a family man, being a rock star and a Mormon. Taylor Swift is currently on tour. Some artists, when they’re touring, they stay on the bus, you hardly ever see them papped. Taylor Swift is on tour…and she’s been as visible as ever. After all, summertime for Taylor now means New York sidewalk runways. I would miss that. She’s doing us a service, OK? And now that she has a boyfriend, come on. Full Story

Even when I’m 90 I will still know every single word to this song. New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle, obviously. Substance! God, that album. For an entire year, I used to get ready to Thieves Like Us, pretending I was Molly Ringwald. Anyway, Brandon Flowers (you didn’t think I would start the week without him, did you?) is continuing to tour the UK – The Desired Effect topped UK sales charts in its first week – and performed last night in Manchester…with Bernard Sumner. In the latest installment of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, Justin Bieber comes along for the ride. No, nothing will ever be better than Mimi glittering all over James’s vehicle as he plays hit after hit – HER hits, obviously – but this interview format, side by side, with music, driving around Los Angeles, is really effective. Have you watched the Feeling Myself video yet? I can’t stop watching Beyonce and Nicki Minaj dedicate an entire video to celebrating themselves.
Isn’t every video a self-celebration? If you’re going to do it – and they ALL do it – you might as well do it with really, REALLY good hair and makeup, toned legs and asses, and some burgers. I change my mind about my favourite part every time I hit repeat but right now, I love it when they eat the burgers. And groove while they’re eating the burgers. And, yes, feeling themselves. Oh they feel themselves real hard.
It’s the rise of the huge female ego. Two at a time. And I am totally OK with this.
Quick programming note: I’m at Disneyland with The Social for the next few days as we’re coming live from the park this week. Have tried to prep the column before I have to leave for rehearsals and shoots and Sarah’s handling several posts while I’m on set. If anything breaks, I’ll try to write from my phone. Thanks in advance for understanding.

Last night on The Voice, Christina Aguilera did a spoof of different pop stars auditioning to be a judge (she is of course a judge on the show). She played Cher, Miley, Sia, Shakira, Lady Gaga and the one everyone is talking about, Britney Spears. Britney and Christina go way back; they started in the Mickey Mouse Club together and Britney exploded just as Christina was coming on to the scene. Full Story
If you’re in Canada returning from the long weekend, we posted a few articles yesterday so please scroll down to get caught up.
I had a deadline last night which seriously cut into my Brandon Flowers creeping time. The album is out now. And I have a flight later so he’s coming with me to LA. He, however, will not be in LA because he’s been in the UK the last few days. Plays a show tonight in Dublin. On Friday he performed on Graham Norton. After the song was done, he was invited to join the couch, next to comedian Michael McIntyre. Who could not get over that face. It is a spectacular face. So spectacular that Michael, well, he couldn’t contain himself. It’s almost like …he’s confused by it. Like he can’t quite believe it. The expression on his face is hilarious. Start at 3:45 below to get right to the interview if you don’t want to sit through the singing. BUT WHY NOT???
Just indulge me for a couple more weeks. As my friends have pointed out often, I’m fickle. My crushes never last long. Sooner or later I’ll see him in a pair of pants I don’t like and it’ll be over.
Yours in gossip,
I’m sorry, I can’t stop. Last night before bed, Jacek was watching the news and I had my headphones in, cranked up loud. He was asking me something and I couldn’t hear. Then he tapped me and I still didn’t react. He finally had to shove his face into the side of my head before I noticed.
“Are you creeping Brandon Flowers again?”
I’m obsessed with this album, not unlike how obsessed I was with Taylor Swift’s 1989. Because both are so unapologetically, gleefully POP. The thing with pop, and my relationship to it, is that it came first for me. It was mine. I grew up in an immigrant home. My Chinese parents didn’t have a music library. They didn’t, couldn’t, introduce me to whatever it is you want to call “classic rock”. Pop was on the radio. Pop was what was there for me to discover. Pop was the first love. And it was a door too. Because pop isn’t snobby. Pop doesn’t tell you that you can’t go and learn about punk afterwards and then move on to soul, folk, metal, and on. I’ll never not have an iPod without New Order on it. Or Duran Duran. And in this new interview Brandon Flowers just addressed rumours that he might be collaborating with one of the bands, or both. OMG.
Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night. Photos and recap on Monday. Have a great weekend!
